My Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R motherboard is suddenly stuck in an endless reboot loop after previously working fine since installation in October. After pressing the power switch the behaviour is as follows:

  • The system powers up for 4 seconds and then powers down
  • The system then powers up again for 5 seconds, briefly displays the message "Scanning BIOS Image in Hard Drive" and then immediately powers down again.
  • This cycle repeats endlessly until I pull the power.
In an attempt to remedy the fault I have tried the following:

  • Run as a minimal system with only CPU, single RAM stick and graphics card.
  • Tried different single RAM sticks in different slots.
  • Used an alternative PSU.
  • Used and alternative graphics card.
  • Reset the BIOS and removed power and backup battery overnight.
  • Placed the BIOS file on a CD to attempt BIOS recovery.
  • Placed the BIOS file on a HDD to attempt BIOS recovery.
However none of these measures have proved successful.

In researching this issue I have discovered that this kind of BIOS corruption is a known condition with certain Gigabyte models and the only option is a replacement board through RMA. Given that the BIOS BootBlock is looking for an image it seems odd that recovery is not possible. Conjecture seems to indicate that the BIOS image must be located in a specific protected area on the HDD and that floppy or CD recovery are not supported.

Given the fact that this has happened out of the blue to me and many others I am now wondering if I should ditch Gigabyte and get an Asus.

I'm having the exact same problem although my board is brand new, only a few days old. I did manage to get the computer to boot and the LED phase lights to work. But this morning the computer powers on but the screen shows no action.

RMA'ed the board and had it confirmed that the BIOS is corrupted.

If you type "scanning BIOS" into Google it auto completes to "scanning bios image in hard drive gigabyte". Seems ridiculous that this affects so many people and yet there is no manual recovery mechanism on the GA-EX58-UD3R.

I'm not even going to bother with the replacement. Fitted an Asus P6X58 Premium which allows the user to recover the BIOS from USB or CD.
