GA-P35C-DS3R Power load

Just purchased the above and installed it along with a Q6600 processor and 2GB of OCZ memory. Turning it on made the case & cpu fans spin for a second then everything went dead and without me touching anything it kept going through that cycle.

I tried everything to fix it including plugging in a different system fan moving the memory around, unplugging everything and in the end I suspected it was my 650W EYE-T power supply. I happened to have an old 360W Thermaltake which in desperation I plugged in and the thing worked!

Is there such a high load from this combination of components that a "special" PSU is required and would I be safer to replace the 360W one with something more recent - I was thinking of a Corsair 620W jobby?

I have the same motherboard and have a lot of extra kit installed as you will see in my sig. I am using a Hiper 580watt PSU and have no problems, but you give no indications what else you have installed, and as I am pretty close to the limit for my PSU, I would need to get another higher capacity PSU if I went Quad.
As your 360 watt is OK, it is possible the current supplied for some of your voltages are better than your supposed 620 watt one, I would upgrade, and depending on what your load is, go for a 720watt instead. Have a look on both your power supplies and compare the currents supplied, but be aware the wattage claimed is not always what you get, see various reviews on power supplies, some are very poor regulation at high load, and voltages can dip.
 
I also have a P36C DS3R and a Corsair 620 Watt power supply. I have noticed the same thing when I switch on. The fan speeds up during boot and runs ok thereafter. I had put this down to the thermal control mechanism, controlling the fan.

Hi DuncanP, I rather think your problem is just the thermal control circuitry. Mine did the same, and can be altered using the bios or the easytune app to make the fan come on at a lower temperature. The problem ferraris is having sounds rather more serious.

i got the q6600 the bfg 8800gts and same mobo, i was using the enermax infiniti for 2 days before everything went dead, turned out to be a faulty psu, im just installing my replacement now, same psu, keeping fingers crossed it aint gona blow out like the other did, anyways ill give it a week and if everything is fine ill let u know, btw it says in the manual "When using a 2x12 power supply, remove the protective cover from the main power connector on the motherboard"

did you need to remove any cover i have a 24 pin connector and the only protective cover i can see would be the white block of 24 pins (dont think its this tho) i wish i knew *** killed my psu anyway hope this helps u out

Hi Fonzio, a bit puzzled about the cover, I do not recall any cover on my power connector, just plugged everything in and away it went. As I said in an earlier post, with a quad CPU and an 8800 series graphics card a lot of power is drawn which I think must challenge the PSU. I found a site which helped to identify the loading on the PSU, but cannot recall where it was. Mine came to 480 watts on load, and allowing for start up current, and the possible fall off in power after a years use, (my PSU is over a year old), I was close to the limit, and as a quad draws more power than my E6600, the power needed would be close to 520-540 watts I think, not leaving much in reserve for overclocking etc. it depends what else is plugged in. Hope all goes well with the new PSU.
