16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 2400Mhz, quad channel.

Nothing in the bios has been touched voltage wise, it's all "auto".

I've had the above setup since August last year, and in that time, it's been fine, no real issues.

All of a sudden, on the 13th of last month, it decided not to boot. It booted, shut off, restarted and gave me a boot failure screen with the option to either load optimised defaults, load recommended or enter the bios. Entered the bios, left the bios without changing or saving anything and it booted fine. Thought nothing else of it.

Then today, pretty much one month later, it done it again. Once again, I changed nothing, just entered, then exited the bios and booted fine. I'm guessing pressing the reset button would work fine as well.

Both times it's done it have been on a cold boot. System is 100% stable once up and running.

I changed my mouse shortly before it done it the first time. I switched to a Corsair m45 on the 09/04 and then it had the first boot fail on the 13th. I only mention it, as I know x99 can sometimes be fussy booting with certain stuff in, but it seems odd that a change of mouse would randomly cause it, but at the same time seems odd, that it's not done it at all since I had it, but then does it twice after a new mouse is added.

So any ideas? hard to troubleshoot as it's so infreqent? Just x99 boot shenanigans that can safely be ignored for now?

Thanks.

Sounds familiar.

Bios complains at cold boot but entering bios and saving then restarting is ok?

If so, just the same as me..different hardware of course.

Try the latest beta bios, usually on tweaktown forums if not on GB site.

Is the BIOS upto date?

F22e being the latest.

Nope. Didn't even know more had been released. I'm on f2b to fix the hdd black screen bios issue. Since then, I've had no issues, so not bothered to touch what up until this point, was not broken. Didn't think to check either, as well it's been fine up until now.

Nothing to lose by updating I guess. It just seems strange that it's been fine for all this time, then all of sudden it's done this.

Well, I don't have to save. Both times it's done it, I simply entered and exited without saving and it was fine.

I'll give the latest a shot, but it just seems strange for it to randomly decide to do this after all the time being fine.

An exit is a restart and not a cold boot.

Same as my problem.

Still hnever found out what happens during a cold boot that doesn't happen during a reboot.

Strange :(.

Oh well, I'll guess I'll try the latest bios and see how it goes. It's just odd how it's only just started to do it. It's fine most of the time, so won't even really know if the new bios will sort, can only update and wait and see I guess :(.

Ok, updated to F22e see how it goes. It looks like it might just be a boot issue, rather than cold boot (it's just i normally only turn on once a day).

Was just browsing and black screen. Have a 290 and the odd black screen seems fairly common with them (I had one all the way back in september also when browing with firefox). Just a black screen, no buzz or similar. So thought nothing of it and hit the reset button, system was responsive and reset, but then done the on/off, boot failure.Same deal, in/out bios and it booted back up fine. Updated to f22e with no issue and it booted up fine.

Voltages are ok according to software, but I'll give the psu a check tomorrow with a meter anyway (6 month old hxi750, so hopefully fine).

Only earlier today finished a big batch encode with handbrake and system had no issue then. So hoping it's just a random 290 black screen, and then the unlucky boot fail. Hopefully it's something to do with it not liking the usb device (mouse, as it started after that) and the bios update sorts it.

Only bought in August, so well under warranty (I think Gigabyte is 3 years), but will be such a pain to troubleshoot otherwise :(.

Just thought I'd give this a little update.

Just incase anyone else runs into a similar issue, F22e seems to have sorted it. It's been nearly 2 months and not a single boot fail. No idea why it appeared to have started after changing mouse, but f22e seems to have sorted it.

Only thing I noticed is, f22e seems to be reserving more memory for itself. Before hardware reserve was 300MB or so, and windows showed 16GB (15.9 available), after f22e it's 700MB ish and windows shows 16GB (15.3 available).

No idea if it's the addition of broadwell-e support, a bug or something being switched on that wasn't before, but I don't want to just go around switching stuff off and it's only a little over 4% being reserved, so meh, just thought I'd mention it.
