Valve's Newell: 'Most DRM Strategies Are Just Dumb'
by Nick Breckon Dec 02, 2008 4:36pm CST tags: DRM, Valve
Valve co-founder Gabe Newell left no doubt about his company's stance on DRM in a recent email to a fan.

"As far as DRM goes, most DRM strategies are just dumb," said Newell in an email to gamer Paul Reisinger, which was then picked up by GamePolitics.

"The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to), not by decreasing the value of a product (maybe I'll be able to play my game and maybe I won't)," he added.

DRM, or digital rights management, has recently become a subject of intense controversy in the PC gaming field. High-profile games utilizing DRM to restrict overall installations, such as EA's Spore and Mass Effect, have been criticized by users and industry figures alike.

Valve requires its boxed games to be activated online initially, but allows for an unlimited amount of installations over a product's lifetime.

"We really really discourage other developers and publishers from using the broken DRM offerings, and in general there is a groundswell to abandon those approaches," concluded Newell.

I will translate that for everyone who doesnt speak Valve business.

STOP THAT.. STOP ALL THAT..

Stop your amateurish attempts at DRM and annoying all your customers. LOOK.. LOOK at this I HAVE JUST INVENTED.. Steam! Come, sell your games, realise your dreams.. eradicate piracy!

We only take a small percentage.

By no means a bad thing, I like steam and have nothing against pragmatic delivery and piracy eradication.

YES. WIN. PERPENDICULAR IS UP!!!

This is just Gabe trying to get everyone to sell their games on Steam, which is great. The EA downloader is a joke compared to Steam.

Gabe is awesome.

Its not about business. This was taken from an email response to a gamer, it wasn't a press release to the public.

I've been saying for ages, good content > DRM, guess this proves i'm not alone!

The main reasons i bought Half life and Half life 2 were to take advantage of the online aspects; something unavailable to people who pirated the game. The same can be said for CoD4, Guild Wars and Battlefield 2 to name but a few.

hi
if you buy games off steam can you sell them on/trade in or am i being a tad silly

cheers
edit if not stuff steam and ill go on to console gaming

why is the pc gamer getting hammered from all sides . i tried to take fallout3 back to trade in ( yep i didnt like it ) and they said they dont trade pc games in anymore because they are only worth pennies. there are also people who assume 99.9% of pc gamers are pirates.
cheers

Steam is online content and games management system, you can't sell individual games as it's all handled online and tied to your user account. By all means go to consoles just because you can't sell games second hand. Nobody will miss you, and you'll eventually be kicking your self for making such a decision on a ridiculous foundation such as being able to sell used games or not. I guess you won't be playing on Ep3 then?
