HAD ENOUGH! :(

I have a completely fresh install of the latest Ubuntu. I need to get either Wine or ndiswrapper to work to get my drivers for my Wireless dongle.

I get compiler errors and all sorts. WHY OH WHY do I keep trying this OS? Every time the internet is a pain in the arse to do!

I hate MS, but this drives me insane every time.

Where am I going wrong?

Ubuntu fails (sorry everyone else but it tends to not tell anyone how things work)

Go download Gentoo, whip out the handbook and do a manual install (commandline to the max) to at very least see how a compiler is supposed to work when set up correctly.

If you follow it and wiki's/the gentoo quides to the letter (ish) you should get ndiswrapper to work (and if your lucky maybe even wine)

Other option is to research linux compatable wireless devices (ie ones that companies have released linux source drivers for) and work from there :)

Changed my mind, have ubuntu working on the laptop now with internet and back to loving it.

I need to buy a usb network adapter which works automatically with ubunto latest version..help me please?! :)

I know that with my *buntu setups that I have toyed with lately, I find that the Wireless junk rarely works at all, and then shutting down and powering off ( As opposed to a restart ) will more often than not fix any issues.

Thankfully this also means that every single wireless adapter and dongle and utensil I have.... Works fine for me.

Luck of the draw I suppose?

My Belkin one was up and running straight away with 8.04 x64 :)

I can't actually believe this! :( I was trying to use a Belkin USB F5d7050 v4000 and had nothing but trouble. :( I am going to use it on my laptop instead and leave my desktop as Windows as it is too much hassle to set up this belkin adapter I have which doesn't work.

Guess I was just unlucky!

yep i agreed, ubuntu fails everytime, one thing i DONT understand that they release new uncompleted product every 6 months, why cant they damn sort out the bugs BEFORE releasing new version grrrr

My old linksys PCMCIA Adapter works out of the box.

Only issue I have with it, is range...It has none.

but it only costs £3.49 new so you cant complain.

Give Linux Mint or Fedora 9 a go. They both have very easy install procedures (Mint is actually based on ubuntu) and Fedora 9 has all the bleeding edge packages, which may support your wireless dongle better. I would say both are definatly worth a good go. I would personally try fedora 9 first.

Jack.
