Gah I hate 16:9

16:9 isn't the problem really, it's the poor 1920x1080 resolution 98% of all the screens currently on sale come with. As another guy pointed out the 27" screens with their mega 2550x1440 res look awesome and they're 16:9 but don't hurt for verticle resolution.

In the 1920x market however 1920x1200 monitors are the way forward for sure. 16:9 1080p monitors are horrible. I use them at work and really hate the rubbish verticle res. I've had that same vertical res for 6-7 years now.

I can confirm this, 2560x1440 monitors are very much awesome and should be on the shopping list of anyone looking for a monitor with decent budget.

What do you call a decent budget?

I considered a 27" TN, but at that size the colour shift would be very noticable I thought.

And a 27" VA or IPS monitor is serious money.

Think a 27" TV would be a lot cheaper, but as PCM2 said probably has issus of its own when used as a monitor (thinking input lag, etc)

Agree with OP, It just always feel like I should see more when using 16:9. So I am currently using a 26" and 22" both 16:10.

A decent budget for a monitor is around £400 really.

If you've got slightly less than that (say £300), you can either invest in a gaming monitor (120Hz, low response time, etc.) or a good quality IPS 24".

There's a lot of choice below £200 but unless you go with a small size monitor, the quality of the panels suffer.

I'm still happy with my Dell 2209WA that was a superb monitor for the money and I wouldn't change it for any ****** 1920x1080 monitor.

My Hazro HZ27WC has 108.8 PPI. In comparison a 22" 1920x1080 monitor has 100.1 PPI and the Dell 2209WA is 90.1 PPI. The current "standard", 24" 1920x1080 monitors are 91.8 PPI and 27" are only 81.6 PPI.

PPI = Pixels Per Inch

For me a 27" 1920x1080 monitor would be terrible when sitting 2-3 feet from the monitor.

What's the calulation you're doing for that PPI? What's the PPI of a 1920x1200 24" monitor? :)

Edit, ah don't worry. I see there are sites which do it for you. What I'd really like is a 24" monitor that was somewhere in between the 1920x1200 Dell and the 2560x1440 Dell.
27" is too large for my needs, but I'd love to get away from the 1920 res screens and move up a step. It's a shame the market is so stagnant at the moment.

What can you get for £400? The 27" monitors that I've seen are £600. I can stretch to £400 at a push, so I'm interested.

But not for a 24". £400 for a 24" is too much (aka the U2410).
