Problem is an injury is still holding me back so I cannot squat heavy with a barbell. I was wondering whether moderate weight with dumbells would do using exercises like farmers Walk, Sumo squats and lunges along with leg extensions-could help?

I need to take things steady.

You don't say what your injury is. Start off with some light free weights, but also some moderate weights on machines (the assist and control may be beneficial? Depends what your injury is). Aiming to put on mass whilst injured is a bit ambitious though, focus on your recovery, then back into training fully.

Thanks for the reply. The injury was one in which the blood supply to my ankle and foot was compromised by blood clots and maybe will never be 100%. Saying that it might be 80 to 90%. This was two years ago and so I have only just got round to doing legs 3x a week having built up from twice a week. Serious traning commenced 7 months ago and I have managed to regain between 10 and 15lb of muscle.

If you cant do heavy back squats, do front squats. you will be doing a lot less weight but working the quads a LOT.

Start by doing body weight squats and lunges then move onto the weights. Don't sacrifce form by weight you can't handle. Legs are the hardest bodypart to train, just go in and be ready for a battle. Good luck.

jump squats are good too, gaining mass on the legs imo is more about volume than weight. Sure if you push 200kg in a back squat you will have big legs. But if you can do 10x12 reps moderate weight you will have big legs too. Assuming diet etc it spot on

a guy i know at the gym, let me train my legs with him today, and it was absolute torture! i was only doing 55 kilo on leg press, but did 2 warm up sets of 55 kilo, then 4 more sets of 25 at 75kg, bear in mind i hardley train my legs and is something im getting into, in order to increase my overall size as its all interlinked. Light weight, lots of reps :)

I am using 30k plus dumbells at the moment so I like the idea of high volume reps after some good sets with leg extensions.
