Must admit these look very tempting at the current price! I wonder why they are so much cheaper than the other makes? Anyone out there got one?

Now I know the 4870 is looking good, but whatever folks say, I don't like the temps these run at.

Mind you, only gaming at 1280x1024 I'm wonder whether it's worthwhile upgrading from my BFG 8800 GTS OC2.

Decisions, decisions.

I would say you have a good card for that res anyway.

That's what I'm half thinking myself. I suppose it would almost be upgrading fro upgradings sake.

Pretty much all of the comparison tests seem to be run at pretty high resolutions and the odd one/s I've seen at 1280x1024, the differences in frame rates in games seems minimal.

Think I might just wait until some games start to come out that actually require a bit more grunt and by then there will probably be yet another crop of GPU's out.

Nah wont be any difference for the res you're at. Would seriously get a higher res monitor instead of a new card. But if you must get a card then...

I'd stay away from the 4870, read my thread here. Drivers are poor to say the least, and as you can see i'm not the only one with that problem, neither are all these people in this long thread on AMD forums.

Plus if you look at my results here. You will see that my GTX 260 is faster than my OC'd 4870, you just have to OC it. The 260 overclocks a lot better than 4870, giving it better overall performance.

... i should make a thread about this...

Hold on to your card for now (like everyone else has said)

I wouldnt dissmiss the 4870 though (if you got a bigger screen) mine runs perfectly on vista 64 (im pleased) and tempretures are firmly in the 70's for both idle and load (its in a sg03 which has a lot to do with it i think)

If you do get a new card base it on the bundle as generally the performance is what you payed for it (though i thought the 260 was a bit overpriced....)

Thanks for the advice folks. This has "crystallised my thoughts" and made me decide to hang onto my current card for a while.

As to a higher res monitor. Maybe at some point, but as this one is little more than a year old, don't think I can justify it at the moment.

O'dear... I'm having second thoughts about this now. I see that OCuk have this card now for £166.84 (almost half the launch price!) and free P&P. Plus someone has just offered me £70 for my 8800 GTS (fair enough... a big "hit" on the purchase price of £265! but that's graphics cards for you).

Decisions, decisions.

When you get the £70 cash in your hand then make your order for that new card and a new monitor, at at 1280x1024 you see less than a registered blind person can.
