Gainward 4850 - fan + noise level

Hi,

I've just upgraded to a Gainward 4850 - installed and running great for games : )

However, the fan is very, very loud at Idle. According to Catalyst 8.10 the Fan Speed is @6% (Temp is ~33C).

I have tried the EXPERTool from Gainward also, but it won't bring the fan speed down below 6%

I'm not sure exactly what the 6% is in terms of RPM, but when I put the slider up to 70% it doesn't get much louder... certainly not proportionately.

Any advice folks?

cheers.

I would suggest installing Riva Tuner and setting up a fan profile. Those temps you have are very low considering the fan is a only 6%.I would imagine it is probably running faster than that, when I installed EXPERTtool the lowest setting i could get was 50%.

Hi,

Riva Tuner couldn't drop the speed any lower than 25%

GPU-Z is reporting a fan speed of 1 RPM (which is def. false!)

I've tried Cat 8.8 and then edited the profile XML to drop the speed down to 1% but that's as low as it'll go.

Similar problem on a diff. forum: clicky

Could anyone suggest an alternative card which is quiet? 90% of the time this machine is used is for Photoshop/Illustrator work... (new version of PS makes use of GPU hence the upgrade)

cheers.

I know this is going away from the topic in question but, how are you finding the card - does it perform well in games - what sort of resolution and FPS are you getting? A friend is looking to get one of these you see.

Thanks

Hmm strange i have same card since last week and i carnt hear it till i put fan past 40% and even then its not exactly loud ?

weird!

I have it in a Sonata III case, which is usually whisper quiet.

The temperature remains low <50C even under load - almost like the fan is always stuck on x10 speed.

@Dougsnake could you give more details on your setup/driver versions/any tools you use to adjust the fan speed etc?

cheers.

Nothing fancy going on here vista x32 buisness edition 8.10 ati hotfix drivers and just using CCC overdrive for fan control and mild core overclock at 655mhz,
idles at 42 degrees c with fan at auto 6% ,if im doing a long gaming session i like to set it at 50% fan speed manually.

well if it is just open up ccc and rivatuner hardware montior to verify they correspond with each other like this

Mines noisy too, noisiest thing in my case. Wierd because its a dual slot fan/cooler you would think it would be completely silent. Think I'm going to plug it into my fan controller and see if I can control it there.
