Palit-owned add-in board maker Gainward is out to impress and thus has announced a new GeForce GTX 460 which not only has a custom PCB and cooler, but is also factory-overclocked and packs 2GB of GDDR5 memory, double the amount found on 'regular' models.

Seen below, the Gainward GTX 460 2GB Golden Sample, is powered by the GF104 40nm GPU, includes a dual-slot cooler with an 80mm fan and two 6mm copper heatpipes, 336 CUDA Cores, a GPU clock of 700 MHz (675 MHz stock), a shader frequency of 1400 MHz, a 256-bit memory interface, and a VRAM clock of 3600 MHz.

The 2GB card features D-Sub, dual-DVI and HDMI outputs, and also provides support for 2-way SLI, CUDA, PhysX and 3D Vision Surround. Gainward didn't mention the cost of this model but it's likely it will cost over €210.

I wouldn't have thought a GTX 460 could ever be fast enough to use 2GB of memory. The top of the range GTX 480 doesn't need 2GB of ram, so why would a card in the mid range need more?

It's just marketing spin if you ask me.

You are forgetting people who will buy two of these in SLI for large screens/3d/multi screen.

Great idea if the premium isn;t too much.

Why does it have to be fast to use 2GB of memory? There's plenty of bandwidth, games like GTA4 will lap the video ram up.

Because it has to have a certain amount of power for high levels of AA which is where the extra memory will come into play. :)

I would love to see how it effects high levels of AA in SLI compared to the 1gb cards.

they always make these cards and they turn up months after the standard card at a silly price and then everyone laughs at them. even the 5850 2gb is £270.

OcUK has an exclusive on this part along with one other UK Etailor. :)

Stock should here no later than next Friday and as for price see our website, I have to say I think its a small premium to pay for the extra RAM. :)

Whilst I agree, there can be some benifit to >1gb even on a single screen. You are mainly talking Nvidia 3D, tri screen, or at least the 1500p screens to need >1GB at the moment. 2x460s would be fast enough for these and wouldnt cost much more than a 480.

The main reason its 2GB is because they dont have to change to PCB design as they would for 1.25/1.5
