Galactic Civilisations II

This game rocks. V easy to get sucked in to the larger map sizes and play for literally hours. Steep learning curve though, so don't give up in frustration too soon as it gets so much better once you figure out everything that's going on.

Cool, thanks for the input.

I have played the demo and got into it and I feel like something that isn't so intense as SupCom, something I can save and quit out at any time!

I am actually not installing it tonight, so I shall keep you posted as to what is in game.

I love the early stages where every week matters, then as the game reaches a middle stage when ** just clicking through 10 weeks at a time then it gets kinda dull.

Play on a higher difficulty level. Then you'll find that if you're clicking through 10 weeks at a time you'll be dead within a year!

Is it anything like Pax Imperia?

might be worth a punt...

short answer, no since pax imperia was awesome, seriously under-rated and so unappreciated! GC2 is great game, great interface, absolutely APPALLINGLY ruined by the pathetic combat system, why do all these 4X developers insist on giving the player no control over combat? bring back birth of the federation, thats all i can say, best space 4X ever! R.I.P microprose and damned you for not making another one!!!!!

Just got the ultimate bundle from stardock via Impulse.

Played a few games so far but not past very many turns. I keep starting a new game but Im getting better, not tried my hand at warring yet.

I have managed to get my current terran game going quite well and currently my tax rate is 0% as Im getting enough money from trade routes to have production at 100%.

Anyone got any tips about how to manage my planets, what to build, what to research?
Also how can I start taxing my population without the approval rating dropping?
How much can it drop to before Im in trouble?

Well done for having a 0% tax rate lol!! I rarely drop mine below 30 - 35%. You'll never be able to raise the taxes without affecting your approval.

Are you making much money per turn having it at 0% though?

Don't worry too much about a 100% approval rating, I've had it as low as 60% and nothing really has happened. It only really becomes more important later on in the research tree as you expand into different government types, which work on a democracy. The higher your approval rating, the more chance your party has of staying in power and granting you your party bonuses.

Alternatively, as I do, is raise taxes, but build a couple of entertainment buildings on my lowest "approval" planets. This takes their mind off the high taxes :p

With regard to planet management - The higher quality planets 10 + building slots for example, i specialise a planet for a specific role. I decide normally by the bonuses shown on the tiles, i.e. if it has a "manufacturing bonus 300%" tile, that planet becomes a manufacturing and I build as much to boost that as possible. Same with research too.

The smaller 4/5 slot planets I build my economy buildings on, as 4 to 5 slot planets aren't really good enough as a manufacturing or research base.

I also go hunting for the resource points and get a starbase on them as quick as possible. I also build quite a few influence starbases around the perimeter of my owned galaxy. I keep upgrading these as much as possible, then as the other empires expand near my borders, within a few turns their new border planets, want to join my empire. This is a good stratergy if you're a peaceful empire, as you can take worlds without attacking

Hope this helps!

From trade and tourism Im getting 509 each week. Im currently spending about half of that on my expenses, so I make around 250 each week.

With taxes at 0% I have an approval rating of 64%, if I increase taxes to 35% approval drops to around 25%.

I have three planets currently. (Just realised Im playing the Altarians).

At the moment they have a mix of factorys and research centres. Altaria has two entertainment buildings but they dont give much of a bonus.

Thats 40 billion untaxed people :(.

Edit: The thing is most of my trade routes are with Torians. They are currently 250 weeks from Ascensian victory and Ive got a feeling that Drath Legion will war dec them, they send me a message saying Im with them or Im with the Torians. All of my Torian trade routes go through Drath space.

Edit2: Currently Im thinking whats the point in having this big population if I cant tax them. The approval is so low because of the overcrowding. If I lower the populations it will give me some approval room to raise taxes...

There isnt one I dont think. After looking at the forums I think the Endless Universe one is just the ultimate one repackaged by a different publisher.

There is a small problem with registering endless universe on Impulse at the moment but stardock is fixing that now I believe.

There is only one pic showing on your post (the planet list) and by the looks of it, you have far too many people on the planets. 22b on a 13 tile planet is way OTT. You must have built farms or something to boost max population/growth.

I hardly ever build farms at all. I stick with the default population for the planet.

Having too many people on the planet is counter-productive.You'll loose approval and as you have seen, been unable to actually tax any of them.

Instead of trying to boost existing planets, just go and inhabit others. Later on in most games it becomes very difficult to gain territory without having to go to war.

Never build more than 1 farm/planet otherwise approval drops off a cliff as you've discovered (I think the limit is about 20bn/planet, above that you'll be in trouble). In the situation you're in, you're better off actually replacing a couple of the farms you've built with something else, population will adjust down the next turn - isn't mass genocide wonderful!

Re approval levels more specifically, they're linked to population growth. And population is related to taxes, so more pop=more taxes but you must spread it over a larger no. of planets otherwise you end up in a death spiral where you can't raise taxes but you can't fund your expansion without raising taxes.

At 100% approval, you get pop growing at 2x normal rate, at 60% (I think, might be 40%) you get 1x rate. Below 60/40 you get no growth. However you need to have >50 to make sure your party gets voted through in the next election, so I tend to keep my approval at 100 for as long as possible at the start of the game (funded by anomolies), then reduce to about 60 being a more sustainable long-term level.
