Just ordered a copy along with Dark Avatar expansion pack and the newest one Twighlight Of The Arnor. Apparently these are brilliant fun games thats got a lot of humour, strategy and with a lot of customisation for races etc..

Has anyone else got these games, are they harder to get into than civ games?

Whats your favourite race and why?

got game, its decent enough but the combat system is poo, the only 4X game i know with a good combat system was BOTF  which is ancient, the only one ive played where combat is turn based and your actually in control of your ships

Ive had it but as skeet said lacking MP.
It's okay but not awesome.

Personally I prefer the space empires IV and V games, but the problems with those are :

Buggy mp altogether both of em.
Space epires 4 lacks a decent 3d combat, but the strategic empire view is superb.
Space empires 5 lacks a decent 2d empire view, it's ruined by the 3d imo, but the combat is quite fun 3d :).
Hope space empires VI brigs a nice 2d strategic empire/sytem view back, and a 3d combat system.

Twilight is surely one of the greatest 'expansion' packs ever released...it just adds SO much to the game it's immense

I've only ever played as humans\terran but still...I've lost many an hour to this game!

Though I always turn off the Ascension victory condition!

Thanks,

Scott C

Galciv II is ace once you give a proper shot. Lacks multiplayer, that was the devs choice but personally I think it would benefit from it. They decided to go single player and simply spend more time on it, yet somehow gave you a combat system which doesn't allow you any control over it. Granted it's not a major part of the game, but it's still a tad annoying, I've spent many evenings playing it :)

You probably need to play the first expansion pack at least, and ideally the second (latest one).

It doesn't LACK multiplayer. It doesn't NEED multiplayer. The computer AI is awesome compared to most. Credit to Stardock for daring to go against the fashion for everything having to be multiplayer, with the all the single-player game design compromises that entails.

Remember Stardock continually liaises with its user base through its forums and designs its games around what the user base wants.

I think it is fair to say there is a serious learning curve on these games and it can take days to properly get into it. Galciv II series is a serious set of games and expansions for serious people.

Start a first game with opponents on VERY low levels of intelligence. Play it through to master the game mechanics. Then turn up the difficulty a bit. If you want to be humiliated put it at max and stand back.

TBH I've been really unhappy with Stardock's customer service, I got the collector's ed box set which had the misprint, no additional content code. So I used the box code to get one, and then downloaded it- but subsequently uninstalled the game and lost the code. Now they're refusing to issue another because I don't have access to the old email address. They keep calling it "additional content" but it's basic patches, not just bolt-ons. Their response times are slow too, and they don't always read the question- I wait 3 days for a response that's got nothing to do with my issue. Not too pleased. I was reinstalling it prior to getting the expansions, guess I won't now
