Hi guys, just got my new Samsung Galaxy S through today, my first smart phone of any kind and I'm new to them so if it sounds like a stupid question then my newbie status to smart phones is why.

I am just wondering how to connect to the internet via the 3G/service provider? I am using one of those giffgaff sim cards and I have activated it and bought the £10 goody bag along with £5 top up credit (btw, are the free 250 minutes only for ringing other people who use giffgaff? and is that why I had to top up aswell for ringing other people/other phones?) Also, my giffgaff sim has activated as I checked on the 'my giffgaff ' section of the site and it's showing as all up and running.

Anyway, any idea how I can get my internet up and running via the 3G thing? I have the 'unlimited data' thing with the goody bag I bought, just not sure how I go about getting it working. Does it rely on the actual network/phone signal to work? As atm in my house it's a pretty rubbish signal, one or two bars, really low. But it's basically saying there is no network/internet connection.

I was just wondering if I could get some beginner/newbie advice on how to get it up and running.

it should say next to the signal bars the connection type

yes it uses the phones/networks signal to work thats how it operates.

Tried opening the Internet browser? (if signal is poor its going to be slow)

Yeah, I tried opening the internet browser but it doesn't connect at all (not even at slow speeds, I just get nothing), just comes up saying there is no internet/network connection and with a button saying 'retry/ok'. I just tried connecting via my wireless router which works fine as I expected, just not getting anything when trying to connect via 3G.

You need to set the APN for Giffgaff.

on your phone, Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> mobile networks -> Access Point Names
then Add APN

settings are
Name -- Giffgaff
APN -- giffgaff.com
proxy --- not set
port --- not set
username --- giffgaff
password --- password
server --- not set
mmsc --- not set
mms proxy --- not set
mms port --- not set
mcc --- 234
mnc --- 10
authentication type -- not set
Apn type ---- type 'default' in the box

then select save.

Then select the APN and the radio button will go green.

Go back to home screen and you should see a G or H in your status bar to show that you have a data connection.

For MMS settings, create a 2nd APN using the settings below.

Name ---- giffgaff MMS
APN ---- giffgaff.com
proxy ---- not set
port ---- not set
username -- giffgaff
password -- password
server -- http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002
MMSC -- http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy - 193.113.200.195
MMS port - 8080
MCC -- 234
MNC -- 10
authentication -- not set
APN type -- mms

then save these settings.
You will not have a radio button alongside the MMS settings in your APN list as it will be a sub APN of your main Giffgaff APN.

Hope these help, these are the settings I use on my LG GT540 running Froyo 2.2 Cyanogen mod and seems to be working well. Only got my sim yesterday and seems to be working well.

Giffgaff uses o2 who in my opinion have the worst network
Orange's network will soon be 3 networks (Orange, T-mobile and 3) but for now I'd say it's middle of the pack.
