Galaxy S5 issue with Google Play Services

Hi All

For the last week or so my S5 has been draining it's battery really quickly.

Having looked on GSam battery Monitor I can see that most of the usage is App Usage and of this the bulk of the usage is from Google Play Services. Looking deeper the culprit seems to be a wakelock from: *sync*/com.google.gms.auth.api.credentials/com/google/eM_ADDR

As you can see in the pictures in a mere 36 1/2 minutes it's thrown up 10,000 wakelock requests, which seems little (hugely) on the high side!!

I've tried googling this and not had much luck finding anything which might help.

One thing I have noticed is if I go into settings>Accounts when I go to my Google account, I get the name of the account and it shows that it's syncing but unlike usual when it syncs quickly, it remains saying syncing and basically hangs and none of the buttons or options etc react. I'm guessing this is at the root of the issue but I'm at a loss as to what I can do to sort it out.

Has anyone experienced this in the past or have any thoughts how I might fix the issue?

Any help would be really appreciated!! (In 1h 38m with me basically doing nothing with my phone it's used 15% and has tyhrown up 26,000 wakelocks)

As far as I'm aware it's up to date.

It looks to me (in my completely uneducated opinion) like something is constantly trying to sync and is causing my phone to stay awake a huge amount.

For example just had a look now, it's used 12% in 1h 17m. during which time my phone has been in my pocket doing nothing for the cast majority of the time.

The stats are showing
1h 17m
Screen 6m 32s
Held awake 1h 09m
App usage 86% of the battery life
And the service I highlighted in my post has requested 19,819 wakelocks!!

I'm reluctant to do that as it's my google account and I don't really want to lose anything.

I had a bit of a play yesterday evening and discovered that if I went into data usage and switched off autosync, then switched off wifi and mobile internet and the turned auto datasync back on, I could go into the account setting and actually get into the area for my google account and enable and disable syncing of various items (Drive, Docs, news, weather, gmail etc etc).

After a fair bit of testing of one item at a time, it seems the problem is with my gmail account (or at least it definitely occurs when I select for my gmail to sync). As soon I selected this and renabled my wifi, when I went into accounts and selected the google account it constantly showed as syncing, at no point saying "last synced" as it had with some of the others I tried.

Obviously I want it to be syncing my gmail so I get emails without having to manually check my emails all the time. I've had a bit of a search about but not managed to find anything much (or at least anything much that is less than about 3 years old!) Has anyone else had this issue and fixed it?

Removing your accounts from the phone and readding them won't lose anything and will probably fix your issue, I've had a similar one in the past.

Will it definitely not lose anything, even if it's my main google account on the phone? I remember doing so on an old HTC basically worked as a factory reset...

Shouldn't lose anything that's the whole point of everything being attached to your Google account set it up and everything is as it should be.

Also try going into settings > apps and clearing all the data for google play services.

Can even uninstall it back to the base version and update it through the play store.

I know but I'm scared...lol

I've actually just done as said, removed and readded my account, seems they've come on leaps and bounds since I had my old HTC!! now when I click on the account in accounts settings, it shows as syncing then last synced so I'm hoping it might have cleared the issue.

I'm going to give it a bit of a charge to reset the battery stats counter things and then see what happens and whether it's still giving my thousands of wakelocks...fingers crossed it won't.

Touch wood it seems to be behaving again now, in an hour Google Play Services has only requested 1000 wakelocks rather than about 25,000 and the "*sync*/com.google.gms.auth.api.credentials/com/google/eM_ADDR" isn't listed at all!! :)

Thanks for your help guys.
