News is spreading fast around the web about this.

A certain much sought after, highly rated game, being released tomorrow requires users to activate online via SecuCom.

So whats new? You can only do it twice. 2 times only. Hard luck if you want to install it on your other partition, laptop, etc. Hard luck if your Hard disk/mobo blows up. You loose one of your 2 chances to activate the game.

No one knows if its twice per day, month, etc, or twice forever. The publisher hasn't made any comment so far. Apparently there is a hotline for SecuRom, but nobody knows if it helps, cause the line is only open at certain times during the day. Go figure!

DRM for games is here.

If this becomes the norm, it will wipe out one of the things that's always made PC gaming fantastic... the fact that you can play your older games on your new rig.

So your '2 times only' comment above, may or may not be accurate. Gonna need that source for some more detail! ;)

Go look at the 2K forums.

I didn't mention the actual game is because it's SecuRom thats doing the dirt, and as such, will probably apply to other titles in the near future.

The fact that the exact activation rules haven't been made clear to customers only makes it worse.

so what happens if i buy the game play it, if it runs slow on my hardware, then upgrade the gfx card than i can;t play the game cuz it requires activation or something?

i don;t think so. im so glad i did not order this game. im not gonna pay for crap like this.

Edited.

The worst part is that nobody knows. They haven't explained exactly what the rules are.

Who has it affected?

It doesn't affect pirates once the security is broken.

It affect me if I want to reinstall Windows or replace my motherboard. I have 10 year old games, older even, that I still like to install and play from time to time...

If you buy a licence for software you should be allowed to use it on one machine. The licence shouldn't be broken if you alter or replace that machine.

This is too draconian. I can live with MS's system, at least they have a 24 hour phone line, not some mug who sends an email fobbing you off to someone else.

Steam will solve this problem for me, but I worry about future titles. I hope this doesn't become more common.

"hey guys,

first, let me say this. you DO NOT NEED TO USE THE INTERNET EVERY TIME YOU PLAY THIS GAME. it is only the first time.

second, you can uninstall and reinstall this game, and if, by chance, you have 2 computers you want to simultaneously play this game on, you also can do that.

if by some chance you are reinstalling this game without uninstalling it first, a lot, there is a chance you may have to call securom and get a key, or deactivate some older installations.

but if you upgrade your hardware next week, you'll still be able to play the game. if you revamp your system and need to reinstall bioshock, just uninstall it before you go through the overhaul, and then do your reinstall.

calling it "hardware fingerprinting" is a bit alarmist. we do not transmit any of your data to any companies.

really, the only people who will be concerned about any of these security measures are those who are rapidly putting bioshock on many pcs... if you use the game as you normally do, you won't notice this at all."

I wonder does the Uninstaller go online and deactivate with SecuRom?
