Game Controllers

Ok so I want a new gamepad, my MS sidewinder is like 10 years old lol, I was looking at the 360 controller but from a competitor the windows version is out of stock (a competitor being cheapest) so what I want to know is can I just use a normal 360pad? anyone have experience with them?

a friend of mine uses one with a converter and says it works fine but was just looking for assurance, now you've put me in two minds again!
