Game demo rant

That a good input, .EXE can be seen as dangerous.

The OP should buy a USB Thumbdrive, there cheap, 4GB would cover any Demo I have seen, download it to desktop, pop Thumbdrive, extract to Desktop. :p

Chrissake, you're like some mould on the wall that keeps growing back even after you rub it off with bleach: if my thread is so awful what are you still doing in it?

Your the SAD one, your thread is a joke, get over it and buy a bigger HDD.

If you give me the money for it.
Money doesn't grow on trees, at best I can manage to get 5€ a week from my parents wich for pc parts is nothing.

I suspect, you're either a :
Spoiled kid
or a
Rich dude

If you say that kind of stuff, but not everybody's got the money...
No offence...

If hdd's would have ''really'' ( eg. 3 € a disc) cheap, I'd be the first one to completly fill my boards sata ports all with hdd's.

1) The use of .zip over superior formats like .7z

That does my head in.
I use 7z a lot as it is so damn good at compressing things, plus its really quick being multithreaded :)
I swear I am the only person who uses it though, everyone whines at me when I send them a 7z file....

Is there actually anything that can compress as much as a zip file?

Looking at an online store at the harddisk prices it seems that the price per Gigabyte is as low as 15p/GB so in reality we are talking about a 75p problem :o

It would be nice if these players either distributed it as an .exe or used something like .7z / .rar, but I can't see the first being done all the time for the reason that NathanE mentions, and they won't move from .zip to the latter compression types because Windows has a built in .zip decompression therefore no 3rd party program is needed.

You show me a 5 gb hdd ( not dvd) then for 1 € ?
A 2nd hand 40GB drive should be a few quid.

Just drink a few beers less and you have 40GB of space, I can't believe that you will continue with the hassle of running out of space.

I bought a 750GB harddisk for 129 euro's last weekend, they are really dirt cheap.

I dont buy anything and my income is 5 € a week tops.
129€ is nowhere near dirt cheap.

Cheapest I got an hdd was a used 160 giger for 25€, but 25€ is a lot for me...

Besides, who says the hdd wont be full 2 days after again?
It has happened over and over to me, once I get a new hdd ( last time I added 500 gb to my existing 710 gigs) it's full again in a week or less, broadband will take care of that.
I atm have to burn 2 dvd's a day to keep a bit of my hdd free for stuff.

Imo packing a .exe into a .zip just to add a .txt advert in it is just pathetic, waste of hdd space.

My parents are sick of me dumping stuff on their hdd's through lan too, I've pretty much filled up 4 pc's ( that's including my own pc and own laptop though) in our home network myself.

I agree with that part.

Regarding the stuff you have on your harddrive, if you have to burn 2 DVD's a day you just have too much crap, I can't imagine you can watch/play all that or do you keep everything you download?

Most are games wich i play once in awhile, I can't usually delete games as I pretty much play all my games once per 2 months, I always return to older games, hence I've got like 100 different games I play in 2 months.

As for the rest:
HD stuff and loseless music.
Anime is bad (for hdd space) too :(.

Also a lot of pictures.

Is that right, I work for a living, have done 18 years, dont blow your cash on beer/cigs and dope and you can buy other stuff. (aint rocket science).

That what gets me, all the lamers I know who dont want to work cry poverty, but they go to carry out shop every night for drink/cigs then next door for chinese.

You work so you are rich imo :p.

I don't smoke and only drink my dads beer, I hardly ever buy anything and I don't get more than 5 € a week.

The reason I said all that is because you seemed imply everybody can afford an new hdd.
Some people just can't.

Somehow I find it hard to believe you're 30+, usually older people see more value in money and talk a bit differently, nvm tho forget it if you want and just ignore me.
You say you have a solution, what's the solution for us (nearly) broke people then, we can't buy an hdd, so must we steal it or something?

I was not meaning you personally m8, just generalising, we all know some of these lamers.

I want some hardware or such, I sacrifice to get it. :)

The solution is he gets a cheap 4GB Thumbdrive (said it before).

I cant help it if someone cant afford something, at times in my life I have been there, but its not my problem of ones hosting large demos either.

Yeah I suppose, but still I think it's the resposibility of sites like gamershell to host files in the easiest to use format.

Myself, I can still manage unapcking zips, but it's annoying as I have to burn loads of dvd's and it's getting boring after a few times. At least I have enough space to begin with, usually means there's mostly something to delete somewhere.

I'd probably be heavily annoyed if I had around 200-250 gb total like most pc's have still, I wouldn't even be able to keep all my games I play installed :p.

Ahwell going to ''try'' and ask a new hdd for xmas, I doubt my parents will agree they already whine about how long I'm near my pc and why on earth I keep upgrading it but still, worth a shot :p.

The built in .zip decompression thing doesn't really wash with me; how many people who are serious about playing the latest games have completely bare PCs with no 3rd party software? No updated drivers, no patches, no download manager to download the gigabytes of demos... heck, how many people actually use windows zip folders anyway?

Uharc probably compresses much better.
A 1gb folder would usually become 100-150 mb.

I'd be surprised if uharc does much better than 7z ultra mode... maybe when using a lot of images but even then it's likely to be a lot slower. I haven't used UHARC for ages, over 5 years at least.

A very quick test I did (simply archiving the uharc directory!) gave me the following results:

UHARC: 397k
7zip: 394k

Obviously one would need to use a wide variety of different file types/sizes for a decent comparison, but I can't see UHARC dominating across the board.

The readme also suggests that there is a 2gig unpacked size limit on UHARC archives.

6 gb I believe with the newest version, besides uharc doesn't do good on all filetypes, but with some, it leaved the competition far behind.
I myself found it great at packing .dat files & .ace iirc (also been years since I used it lol), but it was good at making existing archives tiny.
