Several of my games have started crashing with the windows message "gamename.exe has stopped working". With some games it happens as soon as I launch them and others will play for a while and then they eventually crash.

I thought it might be a hardware problem but I can run heaven benchmark fine and the temps during gameplay aren't higher than normal.

I reinstalled the drivers for my gpu (catalyst version 13.1 + 12.11 CAP) but that didn't help.

I also tried reinstalling one of the games that kept crashing which I thought
had fixed the problem but then it crashed after about 30 minutes.

I thought it might be a fauty HDD because most of my games are installed on the D: drive and heaven and BF3 which are installed on the C: (SSD) seemed to work ok. But crysis ran without any problems ( D: drive) whereas CS:GO, Nexuiz (steam games on D: ) and COD4 (non-steam game on D: ) all crash usually within a few minutes of launching the application.

I also tried disabling Data Execution Prevention for COD4 but that didn't help either.

COD4 Error Message:

I tried nexuiz and cs:go again for about 10 minutes but there was no crash. I remember the problem event name for cs:go being - BEX. Which is why I Tried turning dep off.

Anyone had a similar problem or any ideas on a solution?
I can't think of any changes that have been made recently that could have caused this problem. All my games were running without any issues until a couple of days ago.

Windows 7 64 bit - up to date.
i5 3570k
HD 7950
8GB RAM 1600MHZ
ga-z77-d3h
OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III SSD

Are you using d3doverrider? Disable it if so... caused me a similar headache a while back.

I have d3doverrider installed but not running. I'll try uninstalling it incase thats the cause of the problem.

Edit: It didn't help.

I had strange problems like this when my gpu was a gonna. It should probably show elsewhere but I think the mem chips were corrupting data hence fatal errors.
Maybe it would show on an artifact test, obviously a separate machine is always a good test

I usually have msi afterburner running. COD4 still doesn't work with it off but I'm not sure about other games.

I've also seen some artifacting recently in BF3 that I haven't seen before. The blades of helicopters sometimes fill half the screen. Could this be related?

I think I'll try swapping my 7950 with my old 5850 and presumably if I get the same problem then I can rule out a faulty gpu?

Hrm, I have been getting something similar this evening, lockups and sound loop crashes. I had BSODs mentioning drivers/disk space which I'd never seen before. I'd also been getting periodic black screens in game for a few seconds which I assumed was the video driver struggling and then recovering.

Just went into the BIOS and disabled the onboard graphics and everything has been absolutely fine since.

Just been having issue myself with CSGO after couple forum reading I see people saying putting the Steam folder into Anti-virus software so it dont get scanned.

So I loaded up Avast and added the steam folder and not had a crash since :D
Not sure if this is the fix but so far I not had a crash.
Edit
I only had CSGO crash all other games been fine.

This has me thinking it'd be nice to have a sticky thread with common causes of game lockups/crashes in all honesty.

memtest didn't find any errors.
I'll try removing the steam folder from from anti virus scan and see if I get any crashes in CS:GO.

How did you get on?

I never changed the AV folder. I haven't had any crashes for a while. I'm not sure if it's fixed or not. COD4 still stops working straight away when I try to launch but I don't know if thats related to the other games not working.
In the next couple of weeks I'll try swapping the gpus round to see if that changes anything. I'm waiting til I've got some time off because I'm too lazy to do it right now.

EDIT: Just had a crash to desktop on the WItcher 2 with no error message.
