GAME in financial trouble

Having worked at GAME for almost a year (August 2004 - July 2005) I've got a clear cut opinion of the company. Firstly, they've got a monopoly on the market here in the UK but they've got too many stores close together so it's obvious their costs are out of control there. The training on the job was terrible, they didn't offer us anything relating to the technical sides of gaming, good sources of support etc. It was all sell this and sell that, nothing about why a customer should buy this game in terms of gameplay, new features and so on.

The used games are all really old or ones that nobody wants and now you've got publishers and developers wanting to do away with used games entirely which will massively affect their profit margin. GAME are entirely dependent on used games and own brand hardware to make a profit (at least from the time I worked there they never let us forget that, they made us push for added peripherals to make any money on a console bundle sale).

I literally relied on my own knowledge of computers to help customers that wanted advice on PC hardware and if their computer could play a specific game they wanted. The company just has the wrong ethos for the market today as it's entirely focused on salesmanship rather than actually getting and training people to know about games and consoles/PC hardware.

I have a mate who works there, feel bad for him if they do go bust. Other than that I'm not bothered. Our local Game is crap, and the manager's a ****. Every time I go in, he asks if he can help, and if you say no he glares at you. Stay in there for more than 5 minutes without buying something and he'll kick you out.

Well even if the prices didn't go higher, what makes you think they'll go lower than they already are? Digital distributors already compete against each other, and you can already buy games from shopto at far lower prices than the high street. It's mostly because of the high street, not in spite of it, that prices online have stayed lower.
