Game lifespan - not so good :(

Yeah he has a good point about the modding, the current DLC trend just doesnt work for me. I gave it ago and spent £10 extra on getting the fancy Dragons Age version with the 2 extra DLC, really not worth.

Thankfully a few developers are bucking this trend. CivV will be heavily supporting the modding community its good they value their fanbase.

PS I am not opposed to DLC in principle but I personally don't find it worth it.

I agree with you there to a degree, but a lot of comments have been made about Starcraft 1 being the more balanced and better game for them.

JulyZerg, Upmagic and SangHo have switched to SC2. They were Korean a-teamers. Lots of b-teamers and coaches have started playing SC2. Eventually, all of the a-teamers will switch over. The only reason they haven't yet is because there's still a lot of money in Broodwar. Why switch to a new game when you can continue to earn money playing this one? GomTV has announced an $800,000 series of tournaments for Starcraft 2, and the game has only been out for a month. That money is going to keep increasing, and with it the BW money decreasing. Once SC2 offers more money than SC1 everyone will switch over.

Transport Tycoon
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Theme Hospital
UFO: Enemy Unknown
Colonization
Sim City 3000
Star Control 2
Baldurs Gate 2
Jagged Alliance 2
Railroad Tycoon 2 (What is it with sequels?)

I still play all of these and have to concur with the original poster's remarks about old games having a greater lifespan. That's hardly nostalgia.

Also, I sank hundreds more hours into Morrowind than I did Oblivion. It's a much better game.

isnt it wierd how all the old stratergy games were so much better than any modern attemps at them.

most fps are starting to feel shallow now aswell and racing games have barely evolved :|

still no gran turismo type game on the pc almost a decade later even though all the racing sim fans have been begging for a similar game :S

cant believe EA didnt read all the racing game forums to find out what people actually want from a racing game its crazy that they keep getting it wrong.

why dont games companies ever put feelers out on forums to find out what people want?

maybe the poster should just buy a cardigan , a pair of wellies and go fishing ... and when he gets home he can slip into his comfortable slippers and have a nice cup Horlicks before his bedtime at 9pm .....

That sounds quite pleasant actually. Er... That's a bad thing isn't it?

Bunch of graphics whores :p

Seriously...OP, break out those older games and play them, hell UT still had 1000 players online as of a few days ago.

I think the problem may be too much money and too little time. :)

I can afford every game I want now, but I often only have the time to play them through the once by the time the next game I want comes out. I never get the chance to play a game to death. This is a big change from when I was little and knew that a game would have to last me 6 months.

The only games I've played for more than 100 hours in the last few years have been Dragon Age and Left 4 Dead 2.

For me a game to be playable for a long period of time
it has to be upgradable and flexible in how game modes work

Example:
In 2001 BIS released a game called operation flashpoint
it was great to play and was modable and expandable.
THey expanded and added to the engine over the years, so I have played
OFP -> Armed Assault -> Arma2 -> Operation arrowhead

To me the gameplay is far more important to me than GFX
The Arma games are only limited by your imagination.

They're really not, like BC2 as an example. The only fps he mentioned on his list that he liked, was Unreal Tournament. Feel free to put up a poll asking people which is the better game. As much as they can't really be compared, it's their opinions. Oblivion was horrible in my opinion, Mass Effect never really did anything for me(my opinion) and as for Starcraft 2, you might want to ask yourself why a lot of Korean tournaments still use starcraft 1.

I loved Oblivion and Mass Effect, finished both, but never got round to finishing Morrowind or Knight of the Old Republic. Each to their own, Unreal came out ages ago, as did Starcraft, so are old enough to suffer the nostalgia factor. The Korean players aren't gamers either, playing one game your entire life doesn't make you a real gamer imo.

How much time per day do you spend playing games? Don't take this as a dig, just wondering if maybe you're just burnt out on games from overdoing them. Take your 60 hours for two ME playthroughs for example - It would take me ages to do that, I just don't have the free time.

When I do sit down to play games, my problem is where to start from the huge backlog :)

Maybe you just need to step back and do something else for a while.

I think it's cos they keep releasing similar games so close to each other that the community moves on and no one plays anymore. I played Raven Shield and BF2 for 5-7yrs a piece and the only game to make me put them down was BC2 but now that has been played to death it's ruined the old games for me cos it has more addictability :(

I agree about the longevity of recent games, and in general i think the vast majority of all games are total poo now. And perhaps even worse than that, many are simply MEDIOCRE in all areas.

I would be happy to accept the fact i'm just an old fart (28) whose last remnants of humanity died and withered away years ago - EXCEPT for the fact that there are still some very rare games that make me as giddy as a school girl all over again. The last one that fits that description for me was The Witcher - i was totally addicted from start to finish and i played it every evening for weeks, then replayed it twice later on. The exact same passion i had when i was a kid is still there, you just have to sit on the sidelines watching sequel after sequel pass by until something of genuine merit comes along.

Nostalgia is a cop out response, just like people say about modern music. Sorry but your derivative music is crap and so are all your games lol :)
