Hey all, after not playing sim/strategy games since civ 2 and only just getting back into them after playing Anno 1701 on the DS I'm after some games to fulfill my cravings. I;m looking for a game in the vein(sp?) of Civ series, sim city, AoE etc but set in the future or sci-fiction etc. Is there any such games about? Cheers for tha help

Theres a game called Earth 2160. I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but its quite in-depth and armies are fairly convertable.

You have to put more effort into constructing bases too.

There was a Star Wars RTS that used the AoE 2 game engine. Of course you also have the superb Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri too which can be had for a fiver these days.

Surprised no one has mentioned Supreme Commander.

What about Command and Conquer 3?

Homeworld games are well worth checking out.

I bought this along with a mate two years ago or so and we played it a little but it just fell by the wayside !

It is a fairly indepth game, as you have to customise your units to meet the situation - adjusting the weaponry for the enemy armour and your own armour for what the enemy has to offer and so on ... gets quite tedius because you can have hundreds of diff units running about who all do something slightly diff to the last guy you made :o

It looked quite nice for its day and maybe still does, prolly needs patching to play online now though (not fired it up since summer of '05) :p

I found homeworld 2 pretty hard but its worth a go, has nice graphics and quite atmospheric and there are LOADS of mods for it (even some nice star wars ones!) :)

Alpha Centauri is AWESOME.

It's like the old Civ and CivNet born again. I love it. Just gets annoying later in the game where you spend 5 minutes per turn waiting for the worm creatures to move all their 99,000 units to the outside of your capital.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, and the newest SW RTS - Empire At War :)

I've played Earth 2160 fairly recently and it does still look nice with all the graphics options cranked up to max.

Main thing I found lacking was the pathfinding though, it was pretty dire. On the other hand a cool but fairly pointless feature was the ability to command a single unit first-person style, it would be awesome if they included the same functionality into CoH - imagine MoH and CoH combined into one game! *drools* :D

That was a weirdy feature indeed! I remember running around parts of the map as an infantry soldier ... quite horribly pointless but fun as everything does look so much bigger :p :D

are yeh, i see sim city mentioned. good point? 2 years i thought it was due for early 2008?

They haven't given an eta as far as I know.

What I do know:

It will take ages to balance.

They haven't started work on zerg yet.

None of the new protoss or terran units are finalised.

They need to finalise all races before they seriously work on the campaign.

They're very open about development, hence why we see so much info on a game that's less than 30% finished.

Blizzard listen to the community and make changes based on public opinion.

SC2 is huge, a far more important release than any RTS to date, Blizzard can't afford to mess it up.

Read TeamLiquid.net and http://eu.starcraft2.com/faq.xml for more info.
