Game like Syndicate?

ahh I remember Street wars and Constructor, really loved those games. Wish they'd make more of them.

the only games that ever came slightly close was Evil genius but that wasn't the same type of game.

There's been rumours floating around for a while now of a new Syndicate game in development. Who knows if or when we will ever see it though.

was indeed a great game, dont bother playing it again though, best left in the past, i booted it up on my amiga and it looks rubbish now, great game best left in the memroy

And there in lies the problem with gamers of today! Yes, it doesn't look amazing, but its still looks good enough to play and is STILL a great game.

I recently played through it again, doesn't lose any of its charm.

There was someone or a group that were re-writing the original to get it working on newer OS's but don't think they were having much luck.

I must admit, I remember a lot of timeless classic games which I loved however upon re playing them I hated them and lost all the fond memories I had off them. Games I was too scared to play when I was younger etc, best left in the past in my opinion. I know thats a bit weird seeing how I started this thread but your memory distorts things.

Yup. The 'Oh it's ugly so it's crap' brigade.

Still play it from time to time, on the Amiga along with Syndicate - American Revolt *amiga again* and Syndicate Wars *PC*.

its not that the games are any worse, its the fact that people have been spoiled by fancy graphics with the likes of Crysis and Far Cry 2.

If you accept that it isn't going to look the best and just focus on the gameplay you can still have just as much fun playing them. I still play a game called Covert Action now, it is great! I am also looking for Zac McKrakken as I never finished it :)

get off your high horses, it does look awful now and the game play on these games is extremaly limited, amazing games at the time and very very fond memiors of syndicate.......... but for me it was not the same going back to it, i dunno maybe i have moved on in my life

There does seem to be a bit of attitude from some quarters in that if you dismiss an old game while making a comment about the graphics, you get shot down with the assumption that the graphics are the only reason you don't rate the game anymore.

Personally I play loads of old(ish) games games but I try to judge them on merit, rather than what they were like at the time of release. For example I found that Red Alert had aged very badly compared to say Red Alert 2. Don't forget that graphics are a factor (albeit not the most important one) in game quality, good visuals can add to the experience in my opinion.

As a general rule of thumb I find games that are over 10 years old is around the cut off point where I start to find that shoddy graphics can start to have a detrimental effect on my enjoyment of the game. I tried playing the Quake 2 mission packs a couple of months back and was really struggling, it's not just the graphics but the fact that all the refinements we take for granted now like NPC interaction, radar/objective indicators etc are missing too (same goes for RA, I found the UI less intuitive than modern RTS).

In essence I think that games which offer something a bit extra are more likely to stand the test of time. By which I mean that, say, Deus Ex will have more longevity than a generic shooter, no matter how good it was. Syndicate probably has something over say Cannon Fodder due to the added depth.

I am not on a high horse but perhaps you should be more constructive in your posts in stead of 'it looks rubbish now'.

It looked fine then and its looks fine now, just dated and it is still very playable now. A good game doesn't turn in to a bad game because its old. The monkey Island games have old school graphics and are still great games.

I agree to some extent; however what can happen is that similar, better games are released which can make the older game less enjoyable as you are constantly drawing comparisons with the more modern efforts, and grow frustrated about the areas which are inferior.

That I agree with, however with some games, such as the covert action game I mentioned, and i would even say with Syndicate as well I am yet to find a similar game.

Just to offer a small amount of help.
I BELIVE syndicate is now classed as abandonware. "Syndicate Abandonware" in google will certainly direct you to relevant pages.

Regardless I can say i've had it running VERY well in dosbox. Still a super fun little game. While it has it's flaws and some of them are very obvious now (pathing for example can be AWFUL) it's still very fun and playable. If you go the abandonware route keep trying. there were a couple that were either A) Failing to work or B) in french. Eventually ended up with a winner tho.

I half agree with what you're saying. Yes, the old Lucasarts games are still playable, but they offer a story, humour, and just an experience that surpasses the graphics.

Going back further, I can still enjoy a game of Chaos (Spectrum) with a couple of friends, simply because it's fun, even though the graphics are terrible. However, there was (back in the 80's) a game called Tomahawk (a helicopter "sim") that I loved. Now though, it's ****. It was a good game back then as there was nothing like it. Look at it now though, and it's just terrible. Age can turn some good game into bad ones. Not all, but some.

the game is the same, its still a good game, its just that has changed as you've been spoilt :)

However, some old games were rubbish when they came out and will be complete drivel now :)

Sorry if I missed someone saying this, but give DosBox ago.

Starbreeze working on new Syndicate title for EA

Starbreeze Studios is working with Electronic Arts on a new title in the Syndicate series, sources have confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz.
The studio, already responsible for critical hits The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness, has been working with EA since August 2007 on the title, before confirming a collaboration in February last year.
The game has had a working title of Project Redlime, and is due for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
However, the game isn't likely to see release until work is completed on Starbreeze's other collaboration with EA, for a new game based on Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne character.
Syndicate's cyberpunk future first appeared in 1993 and was developed by Bullfrog Productions, a company co-founded by Peter Molyneux. Bullfrog was later acquired by Electronic Arts.
EA has not responded to requests for comment.
