Hi there,

We have a pretty decent thread in this sub forum that discusses the build up to Season 3, however, it's filled with spoilers which is not ideal for those that have seen season 1 + 2 and want to discuss the show as it airs. This is that thread.

To keep it as un-spoilery as possible I'll only put in the simple trailer

In my opinion, all the trailers give away too much if you've not read the books, however the still of the youtube is just Dany, that's not a spoiler :p

So tonight is the night, they've moved the clocks forward an hour so it's an even bigger gap between the UK and America now but we have Monday off :D

I can't explain how excited I am for this, we have so many open-ends heading into this season, the most memorable of course is Sam beyond the wall staring into the face of a white walkers, we also have Jon in custody looking down upon the massive Wildling camp, further south we have Arya having escaped with Gendry out in the open on her journey to find family. Brienne has made the journey to trade Jaime with the lannisters in return for Catelyn Stark's daughters. Joffrey has just agreed to toss Sansa off to the side in favour of the Tyrell girl.

I'm sure there is more I've forgotten, but my word that's a lot of story lines to play out this season. It's gonna be epic!

The 56 minutes flew by for me, as others have said, the divergence from the books is still minimal. I'm really looking forward to how the rest of the season pans out.

I wonder why they didn't reveal about the unsullieds' puppy part of their training. It's alright to talk about killing babies but not a pet?

I think it was hammer the point home about the slavery aspect. They pay the silver coin to the babies owner, rather than the mother.

On a related note, the thing that most disappointed me was the lack of any kind of battle from the Night's watch vs Wights conflict. It was such a huge climax to the last series and then... what? A few sword-clash sounds? A couple of cuts on the Lord Commander's face? Definitely something of an anti-climax. There were a dozen white walkers in with the Wights - how did the nights watch take them down (if you've read the books then you'll know what I'm getting at).

I thought my TV had broken when it was just a black screen :p It's a little disappointing but then Sam was never out of camp anyway in the books so I suppose it was easier to just omit it. They have some pretty tight time restraints too.

Shame the series spoiled the Arstan Whitebeard twist (as I hadn't read that reveal yet) - as I thought I was far enough in to watch the first episode spoiler free (with the intention of pulling far ahead during the week!).

Seems like it will be spoiling a whole lot more with the Theon stuff taken from book 5.

Robb got suckered into the idea of splitting the north from the rest, to remain a friendly to any new king of King's Landing, but sacrifice no men to any future wars of the iron throne (after killing the Lannisters of course), however Stannis with his new god Rhollor and Melisandre telling him he must rule all the lands of Westeros meant he didn't like the idea of a King in the North. Even that could probably have worked itself out, he is the rightful heir after all (ignoring Dany because her existence is more or less unknown), but then you had Renly who was being a super annoying spoilt brat and somehow decided he would be King, he would not bend the knee to Stannis, nor Robb. Robb was on the verge of an aliance with Renly but due to Melisandres insistance Renly met a dark demise.

Moving on to a Robb, Stannis aliance, well Tywin has pretty much cut RObb off from forming any forward attack on King's Landing meaning there's not a chance of a commbined attack on King's Landing. This is all of course before you even consider the difficulties Robb has in book 2 with the north being picked off castle by castle by the ironborn.

THat's what I've taken from the books anyway, sorry for my ****poor grammar btw.

I think they should have had a slave fight one of his owners at the end.

Tywin was pretty awesome today, I think all his scheming and whatnot is implied in the book so it's nice to see him actually at work in the show.

BTW, what was the significance of that rather lengthy conversation between Jaime and Tyrion about their retarded cousin? Perhaps I missed the point of it, but it seemed like an awful lot of filler for a show that can ill afford it!

(No spoilers please, I'm a non-book person!).

Cheers,

Su

I'm a book person and as far as I can remember the story about the bug crusher was completely fabricated, however it was probably just to show us how much Jaime does actually like his brother. Tyrion gets a lot of hate for being a dwarf from pretty much all his family members but Jaime really does like him. I think that's all that scene was for.

Also somewhat symbolic of the the upcoming bought ;)

The Mountain - CRUSH BUG!

Oberyon - Intelligent (or apparently not? :p)

It really annoyed me actually that he had basically won, but then died and lost. Annoyed me in the book, annoyed me in the TV show :p

It'll be interesting to see what they cover. Ep 9 usually has the most plot changing stuff in it!

Neds head, black water, red wedding etc

Ahh, so this is where the budget went :p

The fight at the wall was far more epic than the fight in Meereen though so I can see why they did focus on this.

I have to say, I was expecting something different with this episode, I wasn't disappointed though!

Awesome episode and lol at the 'shot through the heart' :p

No dont do it. From my experience when you watch something youve read comparisons and omissions keep popping up in your head ruining your viewing experience. If i where you I'd wait for the series to finish completely before you read the books else you wont get as much enjoyment out the show.

Whereas I found book 1 and 2 tiresome at points because I'd watched s1&2 and knew exactly what was going to happen. I still enjoyed the book though because of the amount of back story you get. I'd definitely read the books before hand. GoT is a very good rendition of the books, good enough that knowing the book plots doesn't taint the viewing pleasure. Imo anyway.

But then you'd miss out on the shock tactics. I cant imagine anyone who had read the books got hit quit as hard when watching the red wedding etc as us who didnt know it was coming and im sure theres more to come.

But the build up to the wedding is about 10-20 minutes on tv, it's about two hours in the book. Do you want twenty minutes spoiled or do you want two hours spoiled?

Whoah, there was a lot they squeezed in to that one... perhaps too much?!

Needs a second watch through for sure ;)

I was very satisfied with that episode. Having read the books it's obviously less confusing to me. It's very interesting to me the pace some story lines have been given compared to others.

Dany's story has basically been stagnant from a viewers perspective, in part due to a non-existent capture of a city.

I was surprised they showed the King's men take on Mance, I feel like they could have done that last episode and done a bit of the explanation surrounding the attack this episode, although I'm surprised we got to see it at all, so that's good!

The bran bit was pretty cool, I thought they were going to pussy out of the attack but seems they wanted to do the CGI so well done producers!

And how far has Arya come on her journey, I can't wait to see her plot evolve over the next season.

Some stuff is starting to overtake the books now though, Brans storyline for example. It might become touch and go how long I will be able to watch the show for before having to wait for the books.

Surprised at some of the changes to the book.

Killing off Jojen when he's still alive in the books is quite major, that suggests GRRM has no plans for him.

Brienne vs the Hound was cool, it's a better end for him than his wound festering as in the books. I think with the scenes where he refused to have it cauterised the tv writers were deliberately making it appear like they'd follow the book only to shock all the readers at the end.

I can also see next season catching up and some storylines going past book five, as there's really not much left for Bran or Dany to do based on where they are in the books.

There's a fair amount of plot for Dany left but I don't think they'll want that dragged out for too long.

So from what I can tell there hasn't actually been any talk about the episode that aired?

Why can't deleted posts actually be deleted?
