Basically an interest myself and my brother have for the future as i have some ideas in the indie/retro department and my brother is taking up media related studies at college.

How much space do playthroughs usually take on a hard drive?
Any perticular software used, can msi afterburner be used and what quality settings?
What sort is best for editing as windows movie maker is a bit ***

I use afterburner for bf3 footage 90% quality at 1080p usually a 30 min game with sound at 30fps is about 25gb

And I use Sony Vegas pro!

Afterburner is usually recommended as the best for a decent quality:file size ratio. Fraps generally gives the best quality but the largest sizes known the mankind!

Experiment and see what works for you! I personally can't use Afterburner as the video comes out requiring some codec that apparently isn't on my machine, rather annoying as I much prefer it Fraps!

*EDIT*

As an alternative to the above, it may be worth looking at streaming through something like twitch.tv. That way, you're not having to use any of your own space - rather just your bandwidth. You don't necessarily have to broadcast to the public, and can store and download all the recordings to edit them if you wish. There's also a quick upload to Youtube feature meaning you don't ever have to have the video file on your PC!
