Game recommendation?

My gf is getting me cod4 for xmas, but my mom is asking me if there's any games she could get me. Now i was considering Assassins Creed, but its getting so many mixed reviews im not so sure.

What would you guys suggest?

Yeah i should have said, its for 360. Is Mass Effect good then? Id really like to play a demo. I've never played a halo, so feel like im cheating myself by jumping in on the 3rd.

I dont like the Need for Speed series, and Kane and Lynch doesnt really float my boat either.
