Hi,

Used to use Fraps ages ago, but what is there around around these days that can record games well while encoding them without to much performance loss?

I'm looking for something to record mainly older games in 4k, without needing terabytes for half an hour of play!

Is there a lot of difference between all the applications, performance, filesize, and limitation wise?

is OBS easy to use/set up/finetune quality/performance balance wise?

Nvidia here.

EDIT: Shadowplay sounds good, GPU encoding instead of cpu. Perfect for older games in 4k imo.

OBS can be a bit daunting as you have to set up scenes and profiles and things. Plus it is far more demanding on the CPU (using x264) or the GPU (using NVENC). Shadowplay is very easy imo, just a shame you have to use geforce experience to use it.

I have used pretty much everything for amd cards. Best one i have found is Action. It does a hell of a lot and doesn't impact much when playing at 4k and recording at 1080p. You do have to pay for it if you want to get rid of the watermark but its really worth it. Also it is great for streaming..desktop recording/capture

Ok, perhaps I'm blind, but where do I enable Shadowplay, bind the keys, set quality settings, and set recording folder?

EDIT: Derp, in in-game overlay settings, but there's only a destination folder setting, no quality settings, I assume the default is ok? It'll record UHD resoultion?

Click on settings, PRESS ESCAPE, click record then click customise from the drop down.

Honestly it's the most stupid UI I've seen in ages, it's like they try to make it complicated when there's a huge big empty area on the left in that screenshot you've taken that could be used for settings.

You have to start a recording to get access to the options?
I'd heard all sorts of daft things about nvidia, but that...?

press alt+z to open the overlay and then click the record section and it'll show the resolution, framerate and bitrate options.

if you have the space fraps is still better than shadowplay quality wise but for low performance hit and smaller files shadow play is good.

Well seems good doesn't it?

No impact on game performance either, 50-60 fps no problem.

at first I thought it was stuttery, but it appears to be a playback problem.
What do you guys use to play UHD? VLC is unwatchable. On youtube it is watchable in 2160p though? I think it uses software decoding or something, but at the same time, I only have about 30% cpu use (across all 4 cores) when playing this.

EDIT: Odd, it just showed 4k as an option, along with 8 otehr resolutions, now only 1440p and 1080p?

Sometimes youtube doesn't show all the quality options if you are the uploader. Switch to an incognito tab to see what other people see.

VLC is kinda inefficient at times. The tv and films ******** in windows 10 was impressive despite lacking in features.
