Im looking into buying a server for Team Fortress 2. Are they hard to set up? And what websites do you recomend to buy them?

Thanks, Ben.

I Recommend http://clanservers.multiplay.co.uk/ i use for cod4 ,although they are sometimes more expensive then other companies they have a very good service. Ordered the server and was set up with in 12 hours. Anytime the server goes down its been fixed right away. Also their server control program clanforge is pretty handy as well.

- Thanks for your help. Does it matter if the site sells it in dollers? Can i buy a UK server from them still?

- Why on games like counterstrike/tf2 you can make ** own server but you cant you have to pay?

-Also any tips on how many slots to have? What the best number? The map would probably be de_dustbowl 24/7

Thanks

If it's dollars, more than likely it will be an American host and the pings will be a lot higher than in the UK. I would recommend Multiplay as already suggested although they aren't the cheapest out there. Other companies you may want to consider are

INX-Gaming. Absolutely rock solid performance from their servers. Also the IP range is low. I think they start around the 81 point which is good for public servers as they tend to fill up quicker

DustWorld Not had experience of them myself but I have only ever heard good things about them. Very very low pings and great service at a good price

Wow that does suprise me. It was about twelve months ago last time I had a server off them. I wonder if that is to do with them moving out of London to the BlueSquare data centre in Maidenhead or if they are over selling their servers

Gameservers.com do sell servers hosted in London :)

When I used to run my own gaming server business, Gameservers.com had one of the worst reputations in the business. Customer support was dire as it was just one guy running it. He resold other providers servers at an inflated price.

should have said, I wouldn't recommend them really. Just pointing out they sell in London.

Oh thats good, because i cant find it any cheaper than gameservers.com!

cheaper isnt always best thats what i learnt in the early days. If you get a cheap crap server you only end up moving to the next server provider... this goes on and on.

I strongly recommend game-zero.com, they do good priced servers and good support.

Basically if you get a good provider you wont end up moving a lot. so people will have you in favs, if you keep moving you have no public server base.

Best bet is to find servers from all these mentioned providers and see how u think they run.

run net_graph 3 hop on each companies servers and see how they play, watch out for lag spikes & high choke/loss.

I had a css match server off them 2-3 years ago and it ran really well. Been on there servers last year and there a total lag fest, high choke, high loss. Me and my clan experienced this si it weren't my connection.

Out of interest does anyone still use dustworld anymore?

Here is a list of servert companies I have used and my rating out of ten. Dunno if some of them are still online:

clanned.com - had a sof2 server with them good support, average servers. 6/10
e-frag.co.uk - Think they went bust. but were good at the time but expensive 7/10.
dustworld - good css match server we had from them, support was average. 7/10
4u-servers - Ran a dedi box with them. but gone bust and screwed hundreds of people along the way 1/10
24-play.com - Good cod4 server, cheap price, no lag. Super user-friendly control panel. 9/10
Game-zero.com - Server setup usually in under an hour! Excellent connections to there servers, no lag ever. 10/10
tigit.co.uk - good support, good prices 8.5/10
killercreation.co.uk - Good support good servers, but expensive. I had a problem with a tracert to there servers, ending up in me having a 200 ping! so would have to be 6/10 as i couldnt use the server I paid for :(

Think thats all the companies I have used over the years.

E-Frag went bust with their parent company. I lost four servers when they went into administration

KillerCreation resell servers for 4-U. They do not own their own servers
