I can usually make a decision on whether or not I want to buy a game by watching a few seconds of a gameplay video. If I like what I see, I'll dig out some reviews and watch longer gameplay trailers.

So, I find it annoying when I click through the trailers in Steam (or wherever) and find that every single one of them is plot-related guff, such as two people staring out over a wasteland and chatting about the fall of humanity. Or a CGI spaceship taking off while a voice overlay tells me that some aliens came and now it's time to fight back.

I want to click into a video and see exciting gameplay, not listen to the background story! Why do games companies advertise with this chaff instead of showing the meat of what I'll be playing? Grab me immediately!

YouTube is probably better for 'real life' gameplay.
Unless the game hasn't been released yet, then you'll just be stuck with theatrical trailers. It's quite easy to spot official trailers and just select some game play videos from some random people that are just playing the game.

There's not much benefit in buying games pre release unless you're really sure you're gonna buy it anyway.

The thing is, most of my exposure to new games comes from Steam’s main page and that’s where I might see a game for the first time. If I click into three videos for one game and each of them is a cinematic which gives me no idea of the gameplay, I’m unlikely to hunt the game down on YouTube.

I just think the publishers are missing a trick by advertising a computer game in the same way they would advertise a film.

I agree totally, I only use steam because I kinda have too really, the interface is far too busy and I find it difficult to find games that might appeal to me.
And also like you, I couldn't give a stuff about cinematic trailers . I'm not going to buy a game for the cut scenes, I want to be able to quickly seer the gameplay.

I normally google 'best new strategy games 2019' or similar, have a click around for reviews and if I like the sound, ill have a click around on sites like metacritic, gamespot or pc gamer.

If I still like the sound I'll look at some YouTube gameplay vids.

If I still like it I'll probably buy a steam key from CDKeys.

I interact with steam as little as possible.

And also don't discount this very sub forum as a place where a new game is being discussed as a means to find new games you might be interested in :)

I only found out tropico 6 was in the pipeline due to this forum, due to a thread several months back, and now I've bought it.. So it's alway worth a 2 min scroll through the last 5 or so pages of this pc game sub forum to see if any thread titles pique your interest..

I tend to watch 10 mins of the first level walkthrough vids. They show gameplay and they never give away the later plot. Sure you see the first bit but you know the basic idea of what the game is about anyway.
