If it's a store such as GAME you have either option to order online and in-store. I'd still order in-store because you're avoiding these type of risks. Although they can happen anywhere/shop online. I feel your pain though; it is annoying when websites twist everything up and you have to un-do everything they do wrong. I've had this on numerous occasions; it really annoys me.

True, but having everything messed up account wise can be stressful and I'd try my best to avoid it no matter what the cost(s).

That isn't always the case though, I don't know about GAME specifically but I know other high street places do cheaper deals online or offer special discounts which are online only.

Would be interesting to know the next step (hop?) in the story of why they refunded it.

It's standard retail practice for your money to take a few days to enter your account when either party cancels the order. Online payments aren't instantaneous.
