Could anyone tell me what the 'newest' gameboy is that will play the cartridges from the original? Is it the Gameboy SP?

Off the top of my head you're right the last hand held to be able to play the original carts is the GBA SP. The AGS-101 model SP has a backlit screen so if you find one of those snap it up!

That will only play the GBA carts not the old grey original gameboy carts.

The DS Lite will only play single player GBA games not original Gameboy or GBC games:
