Looking back over the last couple of years we have all had games we couldn't wait to play, so what were they and how did they stand up to your expectations?
The best game i played was probably Mass Effect but that doesn't count because it wasn't something i was looking forward to :p

So here are a few of mine...

RTCW 2 for multiplayer (PC) - they ****** the game up so bad that they would have had to pay me to play it. i've never been this disappointed in a game ever.

Red Alert 3 (pc) - it was a bit of a joke but the co-op missions are fun.

C&C 4 (pc) - what were they thinking ? the series that was all about base building has had its base building removed.

GT5 (PS3) - great in places but shockingly bad in others.

GTA4 (PC) - did eventually come out on pc, it's fun but the missions + music are poor compared to vice city, also the amount of stuff to do seems small compared to san andreas.

God of War (PS3) - this games looks and sounds absolutely amazing, i could just sit there and watch someone play it....but when i play it myself i get bored lol.

Oh, I was meant to give an explanation of some kind for each one ...

Baldurs Gate II - Most awesome ever RPG

Morrowind - Second most Awesome RPG ever

Torchlight - Super addictive and fun

Sacred II - as above

Anno 1404 - One of the first RTS games that I have enjoyed so much in a very long time.

Civ IV / SMAC - Best ever strategy games.

Moar like those please. Just about every other game has failed to reach my expectations.

WOW - More to do with finding what all the fuss was about, tried the 14day trial, I could see how people can get hooked on it, but wasn't enough to reel me in, was quite disappointed, found it tedious at best.

Sonic Hedgehog - So badly wanted this games, when I played that was like wow, mega drive was my 1st console, although I had played other systems amiga, commadore 64 and owned a spectrum 128k.

Panzer Dragoon Saga - After coming from the epic Panzwer Zwei, I couldn't wait for this game, truly is an amazing game for its time, one of the few old games I actually went back to but alias the emulator freezed on certain places of the game.

Probably any capcom street fighter game - Huge fan of the beat em up series, most met my expectation apart from 3rd strike, street fighter ex and alpha 2.

Knights of the old Republic - Waited for ages to get this game, then when I did had to wait ages once more before I got a PC to play it, epic game. Was disappointed with the part 2 of the game, didn't really introduce anything new.

Shenmue on the dreamcast - ambitious project, wasnt bad when I played it but didn't quite live up to the hype.

Half Life & Half Life 2 - Half Life is probably the greatest game I have ever played, although Half Life 2 was good it didn't hook me like the 1st game did.

Counter Strike Source - I only started probably playing this in the last year or saw, for an old game it has stood the test of time with the amount of people still on it, couldn't wait to get this game and it truly is great.

This list probably can go on forever so I round it up with a few more
NES Star Fox - met expectation
NES Donkey Kong Country - met expectation
Arcade Marvel vs Capcom - met expectation
PC Modern Warfare 2 - fun game
PC Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne - not a game I wanted, but after playing it on battlenet its truly a brilliant game
GTA 1,2 & 3 - met expectation

Like the OP, C&C4.
Was looking forward to that one but fortunately my mate bought it first. After listening to his rant I didn't bother. Ruined the premise of C&C by the change.

Silenthunter V.
Have played SH3 for years and love it with the GWX3 mod and others I've added to it over time.

Was really looking forward to SH5 and then read the reviews after it came out. Not so much the DRM but the whole point of the sim was removed for what seemed an arcade player with a hideous interface. Absolutley gutted on that one.
Keeping an eye on it still and watching how it's being modded.
Ubisoft really know how to make a pigs ear out of a silk purse

Knights of the old republic - Had to upgrade my graphics card to play, awsome game could not stop playing it (only wish could get it to run on win 7)

World of warcraft - Having not played any of the rts based games, took a chance and haven't stopped playing

Half Life 2 - Disappointed with 1, this sequal was the best of the lot and enjoyed it

Call of Duty - Was not expecting this to be good but surprised me a lot still miss the original

My expectations aren't just on the gameplay itself but rather important UI stuff and menu stuff.

I've been playing ME2 a lot lately, but my god its a pain in the arse sometimes. The hotkey menu only includes 8 keys, because apparently Bioware can't count up to 10. The 'combat pause' menu causes crashes sometimes if you select a power to cast from the hotbar. The 'combat pause' menu sucks as it frequently selects a skill you didn't press on when trying to attach stuff to the hotbar. Its yet another culprit in the 'whats a drop down menu' category, is it difficult to display all possible options to me and let me select instead of tabbing through 1 by 1? I even had to press 'left' 10 times to change volume from 100% to 0%!

Serious Sam HD - fun to play but somewhat disappointing that they didn't put a bit extra in for people who had already completed the originals

Need for Speed World - only the second game I've ever preordered, gave up during the beta due to rubbish handling

RA3 - rubbish, cartoon style didn't suit it at all, not a patch on C&C3

Fallout New Vegas - good game but shocked at how many continuity bugs/loops there are compared to FO3

Interesting to see Rogue Trooper mentioned above, I tried it for the first time this evening but couldn't get it to work in 1680x1050 :(

The Witcher - Invisible walls, movement and combat felt clunky. Very disappointed, although the main character to me is simply a cliche of rather uncool vampire garbage, didn't like relying on potions etc.

World of Warcraft - Community felt odd compared to other MMOs, if people weren't able to use me for something they weren't interested. I use to "group" with people in DAOC/LOTRO for hours on end, yet in 2 years of playing WoW randoms simply didn't do this. No problems with the game as such, quite liked the blocky-ish look! only downside was too many bots and WoW admins not banning them fast enough.

Dark Age of Camelot - Awesome game, kicked to death slowly by it's own creators. Definately the defining game in terms of fantastic fun memories for me, PvP was simply incredible.

Warhammer Online - should have been more like DAOC and less like what comes out my bottom.

Dragon Age - Totally exceeded my expectations, was hoping for a fun game and it really did shock me by how polished, huge and fun it was to play.

GTA4 (PC) - did eventually come out on pc, it's fun but the missions + music are poor compared to vice city, also the amount of stuff to do seems small compared to san andreas.

I was expecting a lot from this and was very pleased with it, thought it's one of the best games I've played for a long time (maybe since GTA III, as I thought GTA: VC and GTA:SA were "okay")

I had very high hopes for Mafia II, and that crashed and burned, mainly for lack of depth and such a short story.

Here we go... :D

Amnesia - Couldn't wait to be scared ****less but ultimately it became dull and tedious very quickly like the previous games
Blur - I forget how boring Mariokart is without the charm and friends to play with
Red Alert 3 - Fell in love with the demo, find myself quitting the game for weeks between missions
Garry's Mod - fun fr a few hours, haven't touched it since
Dirt 2 - Loved but never finished the 1st, same with this, great game but I won;t be buying number 3 til it's a fiver
FEAR 2 - Liked this a lot more than I thought I would as I never managed to finished the 1st because of the pure monotony. Haven't touched this for a while either though and the load times are painful
Pure - Loved it for a few hours, soon got bored, the load times were stupid and the alt-tabbing to get past it got annoying
Fallout: New Vegas - One of the few games I've actually managed to finish this year, loved it from beginning to end, definitely lacked a lot compared to the 1st though
GTA4 - Shocking, biggest disappointment ever. I've probably racked up more hours on SA compared to any other game but this removed almost everything that was good about it, it runs like **** as well
Half Life Episode 1 & 2 - Awesome but slightly overrated. Managed to finish them both without either getting tedious though which says a lot
Just Cause 2 - Great while it lasted, racked up just over 30 hours, amazing graphics but eventually repetitive gameplay.
Kane & Lynch 2 - not even worth the £4 I paid
Mafia 2 - Easily one of the highlights this year, this is how games should be done. Great story, varied missions, solid gameplay, immersive environments
Metro 2033 - Favourite game I bought in the past year, it has its faults but the strengths of the story, gameplay and presentation more than make up for it.
Operation Flashpoint: DR - controls always felt clunky, enjoyed it for a bit then got bored
Arma 2 - wish I never bought it, worse than a beta, horrible voice acting and mechanics, don't know how anyone can enjoy it
Red Faction Guerilla - lasted 10 hours before getting bored, fun but very repetitive.
Portal - excellent but also overrated. Stop going on about the ****ing companion cube, it lasted for 1 puzzle which was **** easy
Resi5 - Excellent game, props for the a1 port, got stuck fighting some worm thing with a flamethrower and gave up. Should really look up a walkthrough
Saint's Row 2 - Everything GTA4 should have been. Absolutely brilliant game, sucked me in for weeks. Horrible port though
Supreme Commander 2 - One of my favourite games, classic RTS
Timeshift - Good but not great, it's better than I expected, still haven't managed to finish it though.
DOW2 - Massive let down. Horrible, irritating gameplay, very little real strategy involved, just a hell of a lot of clicking and difficult upgrade decisions.
Wings of Prey - Biggest surprise this year. I'd never heard of it but caught it in the holiday sale. I play it one mission a session but can go back to it whenever I get bored of shooters. The slow pace is great, graphics are incredible and gameplay is well polished.
Splinter Cell Conviction - To be fair I did enjoy this, but not nearly as much as the previous games. It lacked something I can't really put my finger on... just felt like I was doing the same thing over and over, when the previous games threw me into situations I had to adapt to using my gadgets and stuff. My fav is still Pandora Tomorrow, I think a full on remake of the 1st 3 games without the ubisoft drm nonsense would be awesome.
Starcraft 2 - Got a free 10 hour demo of this with my GPU, absolutely loved it, easily the best and most polished RTS campaign I've played... but I refuse to pay £40 to continue playing. I'll wait as long as it takes for the price to come down.
The Hunter - had to give this a quick mention, another nice slow-paced game to relieve shooting fatigue. It can be frustrating but never enough to make me quit. I have zero patience and still manage to play it, beautiful environments too

Sorry for the huge list but the Steam holiday sale had me picking up a hell of a lot of games which I was thankful I didn't pay full price for (this is a very small fraction of them :D). 90% of games these days bore me... if it wasn't for the few shiners I'd have thrown it in ages ago
