Games Choppy/Laggy (Not GPU)

Hi,

I have noticed an issue in the past week regarding my hardware. When I try playing MW Warzone or Fortnite I am getting some major performance issues (these have only recently happened).

Fortnite when I jump from the bus my characters model wont load then about 10secs later it will without any animation etc.
Warzone just feels extremely choppy and laggy.

Both of these games however have a high FPS count.

I made sure my drivers were up to date and even installed the latest "optional" ones too.

I then thought it could be my overclock, so I removed that and still same issues.

I then tried moving my games to another hard drive, but still same issues.

I have ran MemTest86 and it passed with no errors after 1 hour.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this issue? I was going to take it all apart and reseat everything tonight with a fresh windows install but just wanted to see if there are any other tests I should do first, to either fix the issue or test hardware etc.

Cheers

All my temps are fine though..

I haven't tried re-seating my CPU but if I wipe windows I guess I could just do that at the same time.

Because it has happened suddenly it and that I cannot see a physical hardware issue then possibly a software issue (from Windows update) or driver updates has caused this.

I guess I will just need to bite the bullet and do a full reinstall on windows and all my games, and see if the problem is still there.

If you go to the Windows update history you can see what update landed when you got the issue.

You should probably check this even if your going to clean install - so you can avoid that update getting reinstalled

Last windows update was 16/4/20 and the error happened a while after that so doubt thats the cause...

My AMD drivers updated updated twice, I guess I could try going back to about 20.3.1 and see if the problem persists, worth a shot... will post outcome.

Driver and windows updates didn't seem to help any.

But....

I may be speaking too early but I changed my power options from High Performance to Balanced, and managed to load a game of Fortnite without texture issues, and also go into a Warzone game without it lagging and chopping around like before (even thought I had over 60FPS).

So I will test a bit more tomorrow to see if that could have been the reason for the issues...

Sorry for extended posts, using this as more of a log now.

Tried both games this morning (with power settings still on balanced):

Modern Warfare and Fortnite same issues again, very choppy laggy gameplay, slow loading textures.
I also tried Shadow of the Tomb Raider to see if it was a network issue, that game also is playing very choppy.

The stats screen shows GPU at 100% and temps under 80. The CPU under 100% and temps also fine. RAM I am using around 6GB out of the 8GB (I know 8 isnt considered a lot now but it has been running my games fine previously).

Only other two hardware fixes I can try are:
1) Reseat the CPU
2) Try GPU without the extension cables

After that a windows reinstall and if problems still persist then I am stumped :(

Bit of a long shot, but have you tried looking at task manager to see if there is anything hogging system resources that you are unaware of while gaming?

Just curious, is Fortnite and Warzone installed on a SSD or HDD?

Got any software that has SMART to analyse the health of your drives?

Also is Windows fast-start disabled? Sometimes after Windows updates they enable that awful feature again.

Ok I have reinstalled a fresh windows, got it up to the latest version... drivers and GPU the same.
I removed my overclock on CPU but kept the XMP on RAM.

@sreeve1993 Yes I installed CrystalDiskInfo and all 3 of my drives look fine (SSD is at 91%), Fast Start was enabled from fresh install but I have disabled it now.
@Grimley I don't have any other apps I don't normally have in the background and the only thing hogging my resources seems to be the game I am running

I installed Fornite (on my SSD) and something still feels off. Textures are loading a little better but definitely not running at 100%
I tested Shadow of Tomb Raider (HDD) benchmark and although it passed with normal scores I was seeing some jittering/texture loads during it.
I am currently downloading Warzone (SSD) to test that as it seem to be the main culprit. Will update once complete.

I have changed SATA ports, reseated GPU/RAM, tested the parts, checked all cables are correctly connected.

Short of a complete teardown I don't see what else I could try, I will even get some recorded footage to show you the graphic issues I am experiencing later.

Another thing I thought about was the slot the GPU is installed on. Could moving it from PCI4 to a lower slot cause any issues or is it worth trying? Incase the slot is damaged over time.

I may be speaking too soon, and typing this is 100% going to backfire... but...

I disabled Game Bar (and the Fast Boot) and tested Fortnite. First game it loaded without any textures issues, then SOTTR played a little gameplay (over 80FPS and no glitching that I could notice).

So hopefully these might have solved it, but I will test Warzone and give a few other games some testing to make sure.

The previous post regarding the slot still stands though if someone could educate me :)
