True though, relating to one example, in last nights episode of 24 *see below* So when I saw those choppers I knew instantly they were the AH-1Z Cobras, I learned that from Battlefield 2.

Goes to show you get educated, and how in BF2 you learn most of the guns and can identify them if you see them irl or whatever, like the H&K G3 assault rifle, MP5, L96A1, M24 etc. Seeing that your not a military or weapons expert.

Same for games like COD/COD2/Wolf/COH etc WW2 games educates you on the famous war battles.

****SPOILER *****

*Where they take the choppers to take out azzans home.

*****END SPOILER******

Yes, it's amazing how often I get asked in interviews to identify pieces of military hardware :D

Also, you might want to edit your spoiler - kind of jumps out of the screen at you the way it is at the moment.

lol, that better?

I find that games teach us less facts than they do other things, like thinking ahead, problem solving etc

Strategy games like C&C are great for teaching you the above.

everytime i'm crawling through an air vent, i have my crowbar ready to whack any headcrabs in the face..

If someone starts shooting you at close range with an automatic weapon it's very important to jump up and down like an lunatic until they run out of ammo.

great examples of this are the close combat series

full of lots of history concerning some things, close combat2: a bridge too far taught me all about the allieat assault the river rhine in germany, and all about the military workings from that era

and driving games teach me about cars

and wow taught me how to dislike some people lots

some good and bad points to this 'eduction' i think

i remember reading a sruvey (not a pansi fake one) that poeple who play computer games have a 25% or something like that memory increase advantage and are able to learn stuff a lot faster. this was due to us having to learn maps and naturally teaching our brains to programme new areas in without thinking about it, and making sure out minds got used to the sights we saw only a few times.

thought it was amazing.....

*wonders off to try memorize a entire deck of cards in random order*

ags ;)

GTA taught me how to murder prostitutes. It's easy, you just go up to them and press circle.

The more I think about it, the more truth there is in this.

My first thought that it wasn't really 'education' as such, I mean I've learnt a fair bit about different makes of sportscars etc from games, and a bit about WWII, but nothing special.

But then, if I think on a more abstract level, there's quite a bit I've learnt from games which is similar to the kind of things we learn in standard eduction:

-Languages. Thanks to speaking to gamers from all over the world, I've built up a (admittedly very limited) vocabularly of words and phrases in German, Swedish and Dutch. I can sometimes even throw basic German sentances together, and I went to a LAN in Sweden a few years ago.

-Technical stuff: As a byproduct of gaming I've indirectly learnt quite a lot of PC hardware, software and networking. Stuff I probably wouldn't know to such an extent if it wasn't for games.
