Bigger box!
Hi,

Nice and simple one, I'm after some decent games that will run on a 9800 pro. I've decided to go for a big TV and a PS3 (both of which are likely to live at my GF's) which means my ageing computer at home isn't going to be upgraded.

Right now I'm working my way through the Prince of Persia games, I'm near the end of Sands of Time so two whole games to go, plus I've picked up Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, so I have a bit to be getting on with....

How about the tomb Raider games? Anyone know if the newer ones will run?
Company of Heroes?

Any other suggestions on GOOD, fairy recent games that will run are gretefully received :)

I used to run BF2 on a rig with a 9600pro and half a gig of ram - if you're willing to live with less than awesome graphics you can't go wrong with BF2.

I'd also be surprised if you couldn't run COD4 with some degree of playability, there's a demo worth trying. Min graphics on that game still don't look half bad.

C&C3 works fine at reasonable graphics levels. The new Tomb Raider games definitely work, I think the next gen graphics mode in Legend kills it, but if you install Anniversary, crank most of the settings up to full or near full (apart from resolution which is fine around 1152x864) and then carry those settings across to legend it runs smoothly.

Hitman Blood Money (amazing game as well) runs well, Battlefield 2 is fine, HL2 is fine, so is EP1, but the HDR will kill it. Company of Heroes does run, but you're gonna be on mostly low settings iirc. The only setting that I used up a bit was the post processing effects so you got all the nice bullet tracers etc. It ran alright, gameplay over graphics there for me personally so I kept playing it (Socket 754 Athlon-64 2800+, Radeon 9800pro, 1gb ram).

is the source engine not just more about cpu power?

The graphics card is important too - check out some HL2 GPU benchmarks :) But if his CPU is of the same vintage as the 9800 Pro, it will run HL2 + the episodes perfectly well. On my P4 3.0 it runs very well at 1280x1024.

I have a 9500 Pro and I can play most games short of Supreme Commander and Crysis. Your card should allow better visuals than mine (I'm usually at 1024x768 high, zero AA/AF).

In a moment of insanity I just tried to play CoD4 on my 9800 pro, I think my jaw hit the floor when it actually ran. Alright alright, 1152x864 isn't fantastic, and a few options on here and there, but it doesn't look any worse than CoD2 did for me (which isn't bad at all!) (of course it could look a whole load better but beggars cant be choosers).

Definitely worth checking out your mileage though, download the demo and see if you find it playable. Gonna meddle with it later and see exactly how high it'll actually go while still being playable, should prolly look out the FPS meter too!
