Hi all, need some knowledge on best choice of PC games to break me into the gaming fraternity pleeze?

Consider me a new starter!!!

That's quite a difficult question to answer without more info - what sort of things do you think you'd be interested in? What is your background in games? (e.g. have you played lots of console games)?

CoD4, BF2, Orange box and L4D.
LFS, Grid and Burnout (perhaps trackmania).
Supcom, Civ4 and CoH.
Devil May Cry4.
Mirror's edge and Tomb Raider.
Fallout 3, WoW (bah) or Eve online ?

Depending on what genre you like.

Ooops, cut my initial post rather short prematurely.....

War games takes my fancy, not played too much console game stuff but as I am about to take delivery of one of OC's lovely Ultima Sugo Extreme core 2 quad systems c/w NEC MultiSync 24WMGX3 LCD I thought it high time I got into gaming on a more serious level. Any recommendations would be gratefully received....cheers

Thanks for the tips...:)

What type of war games? As in my previous post:

CoD4, BF2, Orange box and L4D. For first person shooters, CoD4 and BF2 are war based so get them I guess...

And if you like strategy give Company of heroes a go and supreme commander. Both war games...

First person shooters looks the ticket to be honest...:D

I'm sure you'll love Call of Duty 4 and perhaps CoD:Waw but imo the newest is worse than 4 ( Modern Combat nato vs terrorists and chinese on cod4 and WW2 on WaW...)
BF2 is a different type of game ( aimed at multiplayer and bigger scale but a bit more dated too) but I believe any fps fan should have tried the BF series at least once. ( Modern combat, middle easterns vs nato vs china)
You might like brothers in arms hells highway too, but imo it's an average game. (WW2 based.)

There are more but the best thing is to try cod4 as most people love it...

COD4 it is then for starters, thanks for the insight.....

They're not first person shooters, but when I get board of FPS action (usually after about 2 months) I revert to the Total War games for a few weeks - can't wait for Empire: Total War to come out on 3rd March...

War games is a fairly expansive area imo, I notice most people are going with FPS but there are games like Age of Empires, Anything from the Total War series, Dawn of War II (beta is open at the moment) or Mark of Chaos which are based around one of the more popular war games worlds "warhammer" best bet i can say is download some demos and give things a try, like another member mentioned, download steam and have a look at the stuff that's available on there
