No GFWL game will run on my pc. Regular GFW games will run. If I uninstall a GFWL game on steam and reinstall it, the steam "first time run" system fixes all the games but only until I reboot. Reinstalling GFWL itself or even unitstalling it and putting it back on completely fresh doesn't help at all. Any ideas?

I'll try to do a better job of forcibly removing it from my PC and report back. Good idea.

Last time I reinstalled it I got it from microsoft but so far it seems only the steam first run thing has a temporary fix.

Its not a complex piece of software at all & the vast majority of issues are with security on your PC or user accounts:

1: Ensure your firewall allows: GFWLClient.exe & GFWLive.exe through it but both should by default anyway.

2: Ensure you run the GFWL installer as an admin & have no AV or other security software blocking it (the software banks encourage you to install nowadays for added security clash with most PC games services).

3: Ensure you have an Open NAT on your router.

Then it works as it should all the time. Sometimes ISP's reset your NAT settings & this can cause issues until you change them back to what they were.

Otherwise go here & ask someone from the GFWL team they have about 20 staff manning this website:

Just to test your Windows user account hasn't become corrupted in anyway, try creating a new login and launching the games through that.

Besides AWPC, the fact (if I understand it correctly) that it works correctly from a steam install until a reboot pretty much rules out any firewall / NAT issues. Not that you should have to muck around with that sort of thing for any decent piece of software.

Sounds like you've got a botched install that isn't saving settings or is overwriting settings on exit. I'd go with the registry suggestion, see if you can wipe any mention of it from there too after an uninstall. Probably under hklm > software > Microsft and hk current user > software > microsoft.

I uninstalled it and found no remaining registry keys but I did delete a folder in appdata/local. I reinstalled and the games still did not run. Steam said I was in game, windows thought about something for a few seconds then steam said I was no longer in game. However, running the GFWL client in the background makes the games run without error, even if I'm not signed in. It's not really a fix as such but I can live with that.

Only trouble i had was because of Threatfire which i uninstalled. Threatfire was also stopping a lot of my steam games working properly. Id suggest removing it if u are using it and see if it helps.

No no no no everyone! It's your firewall settings, honest! Or the fact that you didn't install it during a lunar eclipse :p

This is true!
