Hi there.

I just fancied loading up my Need for Speed Carbon (PS3) for the first time since the 1.8 update.

I noticed that my amp changed to DTS, and indeed as I type this, I can still hear Gary Numan coming out of my surround system, in DTS.

I mention the 1.8 update, as I don't recall NFS: Carbon changing my amp to DTS in the past, I thought it was DD5.1 the same as most other games.

Anyway, it's definitely DTS now, and I was wondering what other games people have with DTS sound?

what amp are you using? Sony?

ive only got motorstorm and been looking for another game. was considering nhl 2k7.

do you recommend nfs? is it free roaming? does it have police chases?

Hard to say.

If you're a fan of the series then I'd say go for it.

It's not as good as Need for Speed Most Wanted, but that's not out for the PS3, so I have that on the PC.

It has Police chases, though not as good as the ones in most wanted.
The graphics aren't the best ;)

But I love the way it plays, the way it feels.
It gets panned a lot, but I love playing it.

As for freeform, I guess it is. You can drive around the maps, and buy cars/find races etc, but I tend to do it from a big map, just selecting where I want to go, and jumping straight there... so when I complete a race, I can just straight to the next one.

It's not the sort of game I'd play every day, but I load it up now and then, and have a good session.

So, my little review here makes it sound poor, and most people seem to think it is, but I think it's great.

I see you have a PC too.... see if you can grab a demo for the PC and try it first? I played the PC version first, and bought the PS3 version on the strength of that, ordered it at the same time as the console.

Hope this helps! ;) Sorry to sound so vague... as I said, I love it, but I'd hate for you to buy it and be disappointed, as I know many others who think it's carp!

Edit: It's a real shame that Test Drive Unlimited never came to the PS3, I'd defintely have bought that too.

Edit: I guess I just don't take other peoples opinions about games as gospel. I read several sites/pages of people slagging off Call of Duty 3 on the PS3... but I've just paused it now to reply to this. Am loving it! (Despite a few irritating glitches/bugs) Got it off the bay :)

strange that its changed from dolby to DTS, the system update couldnt change that could it?
only way would be if the game audio was encoded in both dolby and DTS

Exactly.

I'm sure I'd have noticed if it was DTS pre-update, but it's possible I didn't.

Maybe the game was always made for DTS, but the latest update enabled games to use DTS?

Either way, it's DTS now, and so far, the only game I've played with DTS sound. I was just wondering if anybody had ever found any others?

Playing Call of Duty 3 now, still DD5.1 on that one.

thx

ive seen it on the bay for £27.

i seriously cannot wait for Burnout Paradise. i hope it is well optimised for the ps3.

have you checked on the system config?
maybe a setting exists in there now for dolby/DTS

That was always there.
Always had DTS selected, and worked for DTS movies.

It's possible that it was always DTS I suppose, and I simply didn't notice.

I was just wondering what other games people have got, with DTS sound?

I'm with you on that one.

For the time being, making do on the driving front, with NFS: Carbon, Motorstorm, RR7 and F1 Championship Edition (which is simply excellent).

and by the way, something that is definitely better since the 1.8 update, is that the USB ports are quicker. I copied some trailers to my USB2 key earlier, and it was WAAAAY quicker than it was in the past. Used to be rather slow, but not any more! :)

So, nobody else ever played a game with DTS sound?

DTS games appeared on the PS2 iirc "Vice City" was one with a few others too that appeared.

If a game is encoded with DTS and Dolby then "Cell" can output either.
In a game it may not necessarily be any better over a Dolby encoded game so dont get too excited.

PS3 biggest next gen feature is its PCM uncompressed audio but to get that youll need HDMI and an AV amp that supports it, the difference though is a massive improvement over traditional OPTICAL DD or DTS output.

This is why for example Resistance was a 20+ GB game, simply because of its uncompressed 7.1 audio. Blu Ray can support audio with a 6.9mb bit rate for each second of audio, think about that every second is upto 6.9mbs of data, thats pretty darn awesome totally blows away DVD audio.

That's interesting.

No, I'm got getting excited. If it wasn't for the fact that my amp changed from DD to DTS when the game loaded, I'd not have noticed at all. Nothing like going from a DD to DTS DVD soundtrack for example.

I was just interested if there were any other DTS games, as it's the first one I've come across.

Uncompressed audio I'm sure is great, but sadly I'll have to do without for now, just using the optical output to my digitheatre.

It will be an upgrade for me in the future though.

Thanks for posting,
