Was just pondering this with a friend, why is blood in all games really unrealistic?
I can only assume its because they dont want games to be uber realistic so that crazy kids who shouldnt be playing it anyway see it and go shoot up their school

Even modern games like Gears, or even games intended to be horror ones such as jericho have this wierd shiney effect on it

I am not looking for games with better effects i am just curious to the reason why most games take this approach

TBH I haven't seen many people blown apart by shotguns and I don't think many game developers will have either, they will just make an effect which is easy to do and looks how hey would imagine it to look like.

Realistic fluid effects are pretty hard to achieve and are pretty demanding on system resources. It's not like the a sea or a lake etc, it would have to to react with the environment and the laws of graivty etc to be fully realistic. I'm not exactly sure but don't quite a lot of games still just use glorified 2D sprites for blood effects?

As stated, you can't beat chainsawing a roach in GoW, that effect is awesome :D

Part of the problem is CPU's find it extremely difficult to do 3d liquids at any decent speed. Its the type of thing you need a PPU for or a way more powerful CPU then we have today. You also have different types of blood colour but its a lot of work to make different colours come out of different parts of the body depending on wound.

usually take an approach reflective and supportive of the overall design feel of the game, notice how all those games take a different approach to blood, have also have a fairly distinct graphical style to begin with

that and some pansy EU ratings muppet would probably ban the game if it had realistic gore/blood

well in counter strike source i think blood is kk if you play on high detail you even see the flesh wound

By flesh wound you mean coloured paint speck. :p

They do it this way is because its better than life. They give you what you expect, not what is real.
