Games industry enters a new level

mm the thing that bothers me is the advertising in games, dont mind the odd bill board but nothing like adverts between levels e.t.c. you may laugh but it's an idear some game companies may think about in a few years time.
just my way of thinking but i bet some have thought about it, after all i have.

What does surprise me is the supposed massive amount of difference between Xbox and Playstation 2 sales.

Is it just me or does that show Xbox games vastly outselling Playstation 2 games?

It seems to doesn't it  up to 50% higher at the peak.

I suspect it is nonsense? Anybody know?

Thought this chart was very interesting...

no no no... the peak of the chart indicates TOTAL software sales, with the colours making up each consoles contribution, so the Xbox was selling ab out 2 million compaired to PS2's 8 million.

I may have bee reading the chart wrong, but I think it was indecating that of the $12million sales 8m was PS2, $1m was GC and $3m was Xbox, however that seems a little low to me in terms of gross sales. So it could easily have been

8m ps2, 9m gc & 12m xbox = $29m :dunno:

Yeah, it's so much more obvious this morning, lol.

Just to point out that's 1,000's of millions (ie billions), and not millions.
So, PS2 = ~$8bn, GC = ~£1bn, and XB = ~$3bn. :D

Yeah but do remember the PS2 was probably the most pirated console system ever. Their were numerous possibilities and every time they revised the machine it wasnt long before another solution was found.

Piracy was a major problem for Sony with the PS2 simply because it was so cheap and with so many people offering services for modding and the discs themselves.

Of course Xbox got hacked too but i dont think it had thesame impact on the system, partially because it was more compllicated and people didnt want to get banned on Live.

Id also put forward that with the amount of quality titles on a Xbox or indeed X360 thier are more quality games than duffs. Quite a few strong franchises going on the platform thats bound to help sales.

I have....

What the chart doesnt show is the percentage of predicted software sales to the number of sold consoles per system/platforms sales.

Peak year was 2004 for sales but what about each system. Assuming the chart looks at a peak year fo sales and not peak year for systems, indeed. Particulary as the Xbox only launched in 2002, Gamecube in 2001, PS2 in 2000.

Charts approx sales details:
PS2 8000 million
Xbox approx 2000 million

Now in 2004 i would have expected their to be more than 4x the amount of PS2 systems sold than Xbox particulary as the system had been released 2 years prior and was by far the favourite system. So if going by the chart and we compare by the charts approx 8000 million Vs 2000 million then really a ratio of 4:1 it could actually mean that indeed Xbox sales in relation a percentage of installed systems may of been greater, who knows.

(Wikipedia)
Typical example of worldsales :
115 million PS2
24 million Xbox

Thats almost 5:1 so PS2 continued to outsell every year.

The chart is also flawed because the PS2 had a huge range of Platinium Cheaper Games so in no way can the sales fully represent that one system:

1) Is better than the other in terms of quality games
2) Has a larger number of quality games on each individual system.
3) Is any indication of showing percentages of games to systems sold

Surely i have a point.....

With regards ingame advertising its only going to grow as long as we dont have "and now a word from our sponser" or actual igame adverts. Though they might come usefull for the Blu Ray loading times ;)

Nice edit there - do you ever post and not post a significant edit a few minutes later?

I suggest slowing down and employing the preview button ;)

Not like you to moan over the little things eh....
Well I wouldn't complain if you edited some of your many spelling or grammatical errors :D But your edits alter the whole meaning of the post or add entire new sentences or paragraphs.
