Games keep crashing in SLI mode

Hello, I recently bought myself another 8800gt to run in SLi mode, but when I try and play any games (eg CoD4, Assassins Creed etc) after about 5-10 minutes the game freezes up and then takes me back to the desktop. Both 8800gt are the same (Zotac) with the same BIOS (62.92.16.00.05) and the same engine clock speed 660MHz. Rest of systems specs:

Q6600 (@ stock speed)
Asus P5N-E SLi Motherboard (BIOS Ver 1002)
2Gb GeIL PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
2 x Zotac 8800GT 512Mb (currently not SLi enabled)
320Gb Hd
550W PSU
X-Fi Soundcard
Win XP Home
Antec 900 Gamer Case

I've changed selector card on motherboard to Dual Video Card Mode, attached SLi connector to both cards, changed BIOS setting, updated BIOS to latest version, updated graphics drivers, even updated X-Fi drivers just in case! But no matter what I try it still crashes after 10 minutes into game. Temperature seems to run at about 55C.

Anyone help? Thanks

Id try both cards on their own first, see if anyone of them has a problem, but it could also be your PSU isn't up to the job, which id be more inclined to go with, depending on brand and what amps it has on the 12v rails.

You can easily check to see if the PSU is up to the job, just take the side of the case off, and it should tell you on a sticker on the side of it what amps it has on its rails.

tbh 550w is a bit on the slim side for 2x 8800gt's.

check your bios as well , i had loads of bother in sli with 7800gt's until i changed bios level. go to your mobo forum's and look for issues. they might point to a better bios level with sli.
I had to go to an older one to get sli working , some bios's 3rd party are made for sli

Thanks for the replys, yeah I was thinking it could be the PSU, came with my old PC running AMD 3800+ Dual core with 2x7800gt in SLi, thought it might just be up to the job but obviously not ;) Not sure what make it is.

Both card run ok on their own, and checked forums for issues (seems fine), so all points to the PSU.

edit/ Just had PSU out the computer and my PSU is like this one:

colorsit-550w-gold-silent-12cm (link removed on advice ;) )

(hmmm bit cheap isnt it )

Would this one be ok?

Any others recommendations?

Thanks

Id say its definately the PSU, a very cheap brand like the Q-Tec's those, id agree with the Corsair above, cracking PSU's those, highly recommended on here. :)

Right, fitted new power supply, (Corsair 620HX SLi compliant) but its still doing the same, but I noticed an error message which said: "nv4_disp driver has stopped working", searched on google and it can sometimes point to a hardware, so I've checked both cards and both work fine on their own. Tried most of the other solutions, but nothing has worked.

I've had the Show SLi indicators ticked to see if the SLi was working and it seemed to be (the green line was getting bigger and smaller all the time - until it crashed!)

Tried various drivers, old ones, new ones, new beta ones (all installed after uninstalling old ones, using Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode, etc), nothing works.

Strange thing is as well, I'm getting no better a score in 3D mark 06 using SLI then just one card or getting any better FPS in games!

Happy with the PSU though!

Have you tried doing a clean install? I've had / heard of SLI not working properly, then after a clean install it all worked Ok.

Have you tried older drivers?

He just said he'd tried old and new drivers...

Try drivercleaner, completely wipe the PC of drivers and give the latest ones another go, some new ones were released earlier today or something I think, there is a fairly recent post about this. If this still fails, try a fresh OS install & if it still doesn't work phone ocuk tech. support see what they make of it.
