There is some weird ascii game kicking about called dwarf fortress. Runs along similar ideas eg build fortress, goblins attack etc.

Meant to be very difficult to get into though.

Great it works on vista 64. I'm glad I kept them both along with UFO : Enemy Unknown, just need to see if Magic Carpet will work too. You might want to check out Sacrifice .A underated game in my own opinion.
