I'm looking for a game similar to Eve Online that doesn't require a subscription?

I gave Elite:Dangerous a whirl, but I didn't really want a game where you fly the ship first person. Preferably something that is KB/M driven.

Something that I can do trading, crafting etc in..

Any suggestions?

x4 if you want something like eve-online singleplayer

Never have to fly first person if you don't want to, just hire a pilot at the first station and give orders from the map

That one caught my eye.. will go have a look at some reviews, thanks!

I liked all the research and crafty/blueprint stuff..

You can play Eve for free but it is a bit of a dismal experience if you are used to the full game - though that said I consider Eve quite a dismal experience these days compared to a few years back. I never really found a game that replaces it but other stuff like The Division and Subnautica have scratched my gaming itches lately.

I have both of those games. The Division I sucked at.. I'm useless at FPS!

Subnautica.. it's one of those games in my Steam library that is unplayed!

X4 looked like a prospect, reviews are very mixed though..

I'll have a look at some YouTube vids of Star Citizen. I'd heard quite bad things about it though, and all the crowdfunding and so on.

most reviews are probably not favourable, but it had 10+ patches since launch and fixed most of the issues.
other things got fixed by mods until the devs get around to them, biggest problem is AI factions don't war each other like they are supposed to and claim each others space but someone fixed it with a mod

I think the devs said it would be fixed by them in 2.0.

same as you can't build shipyards yet which is planned for 2.0 or 2.5 I forget which but someone made a mod that lets you anyway https://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=403662
Trade AI is pretty bad but there's various mods that give better trade AI so you guys make more money and don't take on bad trades that pay peanuts

egosoft are known for supporting their games for a long time so you don't need to worry about it being abandoned, they already released videos about the roadmap for the game.

It's sandbox though with no story apart from a short one but it's probably the only game that could be anyway comparable to eve-online.

Trade, mine, fight, build fleets, build stations, kill stations, claim sectors as your own etc

Claiming sectors is pretty pointless but the devs said they will make it more meaningful soon

Thanks for the comprehensive post!

I may give that a whirl.. Do I need the Collector's Edition?

First Star Citizen YouTube vid I came across was FPS... ugh.

And I think I may have to have a look at Subnautica too.. I also have Oculus Rift so could try the VR version, although I'm kinda after a game I can lean back in my chair and chill with!

tbh mate, there is no other game like EVE online, the reason all the trading and building works so well is from the market being player driven not many games have that kind of live market. You can play EVE for free by making enough isk to buy your plex.
I got Star citizen too, was gonna be like eve but you could fly the ship and walk around with all the trading in, but if i am honest i don't think all the cool stuff of EVE like market pvp will make its way to SC.

Yeah, I kinda suspected that.

I'll see how I get on with X4 when I get chance to spend a couple of hours with it, and if the worst comes to the worst then I may revisit Eve. I seem to remember when I last played someone blew up my ship and took all my cargo!

Had a look at Homeworld. Music seems good on the trailer.

Will prob pick it up before the sale ends.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 is another I looked at. Bit steep at the mo tho.

Star Trek Online is free, has trading and crafting and tones more content then Eve-online although its a lot more casual and PvE focused then Eve. If solo/offline play is ok there are a lot of options that have not been listed. Is online a requirement?

No preference about online or offline.

Might try Star Trek Online in a bit.

I've had a quick go of X4 this afternoon... It's first person flying the ship which I didn't really want. Hired a bod to fly it, but now can't figure out how to do anything - undock etc..
Hmm.. I'm missing something obviously!

After all this, I think I wanna get back into Eve. I recovered my account and logged in. I have 5 billion isk!

The UI has me running scared, I can’t remember the foggiest how to play. Can anyone recommend a video or something that will get me back into the swing of things??
