Games like Stalker?

I tried to play stalker earlier, but found it very difficult in the sense that the weapons (albeit the pistol) felt like a pea shooter and even crouched it took way to many shots to kill someone - really lost the atmosphere for me...

When downloading the complete mod I noticed they have also made a realistic weapon mod. Might be worth looking at - http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009/downloads

Maybe you could upload some gameplay and that way we can suggest tips or different tactics. Once you get better armour and a half decent pistol and auto things pick up quite a lot. A lot of people struggle to get going but once they do they tend to never look back.

I guess so but at 1st with limited weapons etc it is hard especially after you take out the buildings on the West of map and start heading West and underground.

btw is Fraps what most use to record gameplay?

Stalker is different to a lot of fps games, in some ways it has rpg lite elements in that you start out with limited skill and power, you need to carryout as many side missions as possible early on, so that you can afford to upgrade your weapons and suit, you will also find a lot of useful kit as you loot dead bodies and find other trash. The first main mission when you raid the farmhouse will produce some useful loot, including higher powered guns like the shotgun.

At no point in the game though do you feel like an invincible, gun slinging super hero, I think that was the makers intent tbh. You have to play with more of a measured stealthy approach than other fps games and respect the zone at all times, stick with it though, eventually it clicks into place.

Yea I get that, but if I creep up within 10metres of a guy and shoot him in the back of the head I don't expect him to turn around and shoot me with me having to but another 2 or 3 bullets in him...

I don't want to be invincible, I just want realistic damage!

Yes, though I 'think' you need the full version otherwise it'll only record for a short period of time.

Regarding weapons, although it's some way off, keep an eye out for a Desert Eagle, or better still a modified one called the Big Boy. ;) I also found the 'Sig' to be my rifle of choice, accurate, and capable of dealing high damage make it a wise choice.

Also, you could simply just watch a few 'Let's Play' tutorial guides on youtube, some are quite helpful and will give a different perspective on play.

Chances are you missed. In Stalker, just because your crosshair is pointing at something doesn't mean you're going to hit it, especially if your weapon is degraded.

I think the biggest 'aha' moment for me in Stalker is that player interacted items don't (intentionally) despawn. You're not supposed to try and carry four handguns, two assault rifles, a sniper rifle, a sawn off shotgun, two types of ammo for all weapons, food, medicine and loot around at once.

If you completely burden yourself with stuff, go for a run, then unburden yourself of everything except a single weapon, a few magazines, bandages and a sidearm you will notice you can run and fight a LOT more efficiently. I found the best thing to do is create stockpiles of assorted goods in hidden places that you can get to fairly easily. Always scout areas you're planning on moving through, and always attack them with an escape route planned.

So you mean that if you carry less weight you fight and aim easier? I know you are faster but I mean I always carry max stuff so I can sell all the time.

Carry max stuff when you're heading along roads that you've already explored on the way to traders. If you're scouting a new area, go in as unburdened as possible.

This also has the advantage of not having to go back to dangerous areas to collect loot, because you bring it out with you. It's much easier to do three trips to a trader from a fairly secure roadside stash, than having to do one trip from the roadside and two that involve dangerous fights. Especially if you are going to expend more ammo and aid kits than you'll make from your loot.

I found any of the Stalker titles scary regardless of the mod. As long as the mod you're using tweaks the graphics from vanilla (this really only applies to SOC), then you'll be fine. Try the Complete mods, they come with an installer which can be handy if you don't fancy switching and ammending files.
