Games like Stronghold but in presenttime/future?

Hi everyone. Does anyone know of any base building games like stronghold, but set in the current or near future?

The whole enemy faction thing is not even that much of a requirement. It's mostly about the building part. A bit like a city-builder, but much smaller, where you can also build walls etc.

Thanks Anno is one of my all time fav game, but I was not looking for a citly builder as I said, rather something smaller. Something where you build 'a modern castle' if you will. Basically one semi-selfsustaining to a self-sustaining building, with low population numbers etc.

No idea how to describe it, sorry.

Stronghold is quite niche in it's own little way which I've always loved, but not many games match it!

Banished is quite similar in terms of size and complexity but lacks any combat entirely.

Banished is a great game, but it's set in the same time as Stronghold approximately, no? I mean, OK roughly 300 years later, but still. Other then that, Banished is closed to what I am looking for.

Rimworld is definitely very nice. Indeed, its on my wishlist . It is the kind of game I am looking for, sadly though, it's not yet released. (I don't like buying early access games.)

I have never heard of Maia before. But I did see a video about it just now. Not 100% that they can pull it off, but if they can deliver, it will be a must buy, once released. Sadly, it's still not out .

There is also Sol0, but that is not quit what I had in mind either.


To be honest, all these games are great, and I feel like a snobby little b****, but they are not quit like stronghold, though Rimworld does somehow come close a little.

About Rimworld, you say you don't like early access games which is fair enough but Rimworld is already a hugely playable and polished game with a huge mod community. If you are teetering on the edge of buying check out some let's plays on youtube to see how good it is.

Have you looked at Space Engineers as well? Another early access game unfortunately but it does look good.

I agree.

Tried with Alpha 9 and was like forget it. Tried months later with Alpha 13 and lost a whole week playing it.

Completely different to Stronghold or that style.

It's the closest game I can think off as there are no modern day Stronghold equivalents. Anyway, OP will love it.

Might also like Factorio but I found it exceptionally pointless.

Your best bet would be one of the survival type of games but can't think of any similar to Stronghold. State of Decay has base building.
