Hi, a few weeks ago i finally went for it and made my first build. Everything went pretty smoothly but since then i have had problems with games locking up after a seemingly random amount of time - usually somewhere between 10 minutes and a few hours.

The game will either lock totally with the sound looping, or the screen will go black or sometimes bright pink and i wont be able to tab out or open task manager - i can still hear the game going on however and if i hit escape i can hear it pause. Call of duty 4 seems to have the most frequent problems, but it has happened with pretty much every game i've tried.

My comp:

Antec 900

Vista business 32bit - courtesy of msdnaa :).

Q6600 @ 2.4 - was running at 3.2 but i defaulted to stock incase the clock was causing trouble

TT 120

Abit IP35

2Gb Geil ULL

OCUK 8800GT 512Mb - 169.25 drivers

Corsair HX 520 PSU

Seagate barracuda 7200.10 250GB

Pioneer dvd drive

At first i read about the GT's with heat issues, so started using rivatuner to moniter the temps/control the fan. The temps are ~45 idle and ~55 at load with 60% fan. I have tried reseating the card and reinstalling the driver (+ driver cleaner) and the games themselves. The machine is prime95 stable for 8+ hours (have only run the blend test for 30 mins though), and passes OCCT 30min ram test. I have never experienced a lockup when running 3dmark 06 or 01, but the crisis benchmark has .

Clocked and unclocked the machine has been completely stable unless i play anything.

Any and all opinions/help appreciated! ;).

hmm have you tried anyt different drivers or just the one set ?

also what voltage do you have you ram at ? some motherbaords by default dont supple the recomended voltage that the manufacturers require. they tend to start at 1.8v were as most high performant memory requires 1.9-2.1 dependng on brand

it sounds to me like a graphics card issue, do you have another graphics card that is available to you to swap to see if the problem goes away?

thefishdude: I havent tried any different driver versions as of yet, but will try that. RAM voltage is set @ 2.1v in bios, it wouldnt boot properly at the default 1.8v.

Pandobear: Unfortunately i dont have another card to test with ;/.

chrispystix: Yep, it was set default at 100mhz.

Thanks,

it is probably worthwhile removing one stick of memory and trying it with that, but without other parts to swap in/out then fault finding is difficult. The other thing to try is underclock everything, set memory with loose timings, board at a 200 fsb and try again. I am still betting on it being a graphics card fault. Could be wrong though.....

Yeah, i'll try what you said and if that doesnt work i guess i'll have to RMA the card when i get back from uni at easter ;/.
