Games need "more realistic graphics..."

Mr Entis told the Siggraph conference that games makers had to use much more than graphics to make their creations believable, engaging and fun.

Game worlds must not just look lifelike, he said, they must also react in a realistic manner too.

Tools that let players create content were also becoming important, he said.

Siggraph, held in San Diego, is the world's leading computer graphics conference.

During his speech, Mr Entis warned against assuming that games which look lifelike automatically take on the characteristics of the real world.

He said this problem was most acute when creating believable human video game characters.

I would generally disagree with this.... For instance, I really like Crackdown due to its over-exaggerated game world and cartoony graphics...

Do you buy games that are more realistic? or fun?

Depends on the game for me. Obviously it can't be totally realistic else were back to real life but realism can add weight to a story and in the case of FPS's more tense action. I have no problem with sci-fi elements incorporated into games as long as its done well e.g Alpha Centauri, Deus Ex even Farcry. If we talk about realism as in well animated characters & well laid out levels then that is an essential that separates a good game from an excellent game.

I go for realistic games.

You can still have a realistic game and do something completely different to what you would normally do in life :)

I don't think he meant all games, just those that TRY to be realistic.

We are still a long way of realistic, the level of lighting is still beyond what is capable, which, whilst it does look good, still isn't at the 100% believable. Then we have the level or detail in textures and particle effects.

We are certainly heading that way, but it's impossible to do it right now.

TF2 is a perfect example of this. unrealistic graphics but still amazing !
 
hmm i dislike the overall "shiny" ness of modern day graphics. the cleanliness and sharpness of it all.

the real world bears little resemblance to the majority of colour palettes i have seen used in games.

also the physics need to be better, for example, no matter what environment (apart from LUNAR) you expect a certain level of distance drop on bullets, especially from sniper rifles, totla lack of accuracy when jumping etc.

these are the details which shouldnt take too much resources, or challenge too much in terms of processing/GPU power - yet they take time and effort to get right,

unfortunately most dev's seem to view time and effort as dirty wordsS!
 
He's right in the second part - games should react in a realistic (within context), consistent and expected way. Pretty much a design staple. In the first part he is talking right out of his bottom. In my exeprience, the closer we get to visual reality the more the uncanny valley principal kicks in - close enough that deficiencies become even more obvious and distracting.
 
I think he's really saying that games need to be believable in the context of their style. With a cartoony styled game, you'd expect the world to react like a cartoon world would. Right now I think the main concern isn't purely graphical effects, it's physical effects. Anyone seen the technology Lucasarts are working on? There's a demo of physics and ai based animations. Rather than simply having a preset walking animation, characters are animated on the fly based on their environment.
