Games on SSD

Hey how can I put TF2 on my SSD. I've looked into doing the SteamMover programs but they don't have Steam games as an option.

I've also done the MKLINK commands and just couldn't get it working.


Any ideas?

Steam Mover will do it. I've done it myself with loads of Steam games.

Assuming your D: is your hard drive, and C: is your SSD...

Copy D:\WhereverSteamIs\WhicheverDirectory\TF2 to C:\SomePlace\WhateverDirectory\TF2

Rename D:\WhereverSteamIs\WhicheverDirectory\TF2 to D:\WhereverSteamIs\WhicheverDirectory\TF2_backup

Open command prompt

CD D:\WhereverSteamIs\WhicheverDirectory\

MKLINK /J "TF2" "C:\SomePlace\WhateverDirectory\TF2"

Test

If it works, delete D:\WhereverSteamIs\WhicheverDirectory\TF2_backup

I didnt think Valve games specifically worked with the steam mover programs. Altho I believe portal 2 did when i tried. Plus do you really need TF2 on an SSD? It loads in seconds anyway...

I use this one, just open an administrative command prompt:

mklink /D "location inc. folder name (steam directory)" "target(where you've moved the steam games to)"

True. I wont bother then, What programs do you reccomend putting on a SSD? MS Office?

I still keep TF2 on my mechanical drive, as it loads that fast I didnt see the point in taking up so much valuable SSD space with it.

Other programs I have on mine include MS Office and Visual Studio 2010. Whether office is worth it is debatable but VS I am glad for as it loads really fast. So do office programs, so it really depends on your patience (and avaliable SSD space)

You could try having Office on it, if you like it there and have the space, leave it there. If not uninstall and put it on your HDD.

Older valve games left the gcf's in the base of the steamapps folder which meant you ended up with tf2,css et al in the same huge directory which could easily push 30gig+. Newer valve games like portal2, dota2, put them in steamapps/common like a standard 3rd (non-valve) party game.

Steam-mover works only where you can move the entire folder (so the latter scenario) because that's really how MKLINK works.

TF2 is the game I actually see the biggest performance increase on for some reason, about the same benefit as BF3. I figure it's because a gcf is basically just a large compressed object so it needs a lot of seeks in it for each individual load in source engine games but I'm not technical enough to know if I'm right

I MOVE the folder that I want to my SSD under C:\Games (From D:\Steam\steamapps\gamename). Then use;

MKLINK /J "D:\Steam\steamapps\gamename" "C:\Games\gamename"

Simple. Always remember this: MKLINK /J [oldlocation] [newlocation]
And remember to MOVE/CUT the folder and not copy.
This is what I use to have some Steam games on my SSD and some on my D drive.

Doesn't Game save Manager offer a steam mover feature? With the advantage of also sorting out your save games.

OS, Office, Apps and the games I'm currently playing all running on my 120GB Corsair Force 3. Awesome stuff. Best upgrade ever since my Orchid Righteous 3D Voodoo 1 card
