Games on usb sticks?

Would they work, I'm talking about games that don't need to be in the REG, reason is a lappy with just 12 gb of hdd space and 1 usb slot, so was thinking of installing games on a usb stick and just plug in the usb with the game i want to play each time?

Also how slow can I expect it to load etc, the lappy only has usb 1 speeds...

Games I was thinking of were games like empire earth, civilization 3, unreal tourney, etc...

I've done it with older games, COD and UT for example. It loads a little slower than from HDD obviously, but seems to work fine. Very useful for lan parties. :)

WoW thanks for that link, Didn't know such mods existed that made ttdlx so much bigger & better, also finally better ai, last ttdlx version im playing is ttdxpatch 2.0 lol :D .

I'm off buying usb sticks I suppose :D .

EDIT: WOOOOOT active ttdlx mp servers, really thanks very much for that mod, now excuse me I'm going to revive old memory's on transport tycoon . :D

Managed to play the UT2K4 demo over the colleges network, had some lan gaming during a 3 hour graphics lesson.
All i did was install the game here at home, then copied the files from the program files folder onto my ipod, put it on a few peoples account and off we went, didn't work like that with the BF2 demo sadly, but i want to try it with other games.
 
q3 can be done, and theres a crack that lets you enter a blank cd key, obviously thats naughty but we're talking about for people who already have the game, and its the only way to do it without it being in registry etc. Delete this post if its inappropriate, i just didnt think it was.
Myself and a few friends do it at uni on there pcs and our external drives, all having old copies of the game somewhere anyway :)
 
what about say a couple of gig sd or memory stick duo in an internal card reader? would this be faster?
 
I suppose that as long as the USB stick is always the same drive letter, even games that DO use the registry would still be fine.
