Games seem slow when installed on D:

Sorry, wasn't 100% sure where to put this

I have one HDD partioned into C: and D:

C: resides Win XP Pro and all other program and system files and is 12Gb in size with 2GB free

D: resides all documents, music, videos and is 46Gb in size with 20Gb free.

I recently re-installed everthing and pre install, Medal of Honor was sat on C:

The game ran fine in single player and multiplayer too. But free space on C: was down to about 800mb which I didnt like

So, after re-install I installed MOHAA to D:

Now, single player and multiplayer the game stutters when smoke appears or shots are fired, in fact, it also does it randomly too.

Now, graphics drivers are the same (ATi Mobility Radeon), the only thing that is different is the install path.

Could it be that because the game is installed at D but all reg entries are at C that I could be getting this 'lag'?

I have swapped my pagefile to D: now and am about to try again

Its not network as I ping at about 56ms on most servers.

Any help is apprecieated.

I suppose that this will depend on if your computer is using the page file on C and also acessing D at the same time... sorta spanning accross two partitions... but I dont know if it will make that much of a difference

Its annoying me. Still the same.

I'm going to back everything up, clean install and re-adjust the partitions to make C: bigger.

i only have one hard drive with 3 partitions. windows on c: (so is the pagefile). i run games from my e: drive with no problems whatsoever. :)

i think the problem is elsewhere.

would run far faster on a separate drive all together

i think "far faster" is an exaggeration. there's certainly no reason why a game shouldn't run without stuttering from a partition on the same drive. as mentioned above, i do it all the time with music running in the background also.

windows/pagefile on c:
music stored on d:
games on e:

and that's with an old single core cpu with vista32. :)

well it is an exaggeration, but having it on the same drive, but not the same partition can often lead to performance problems (if it's a singular drive)

try these things.. disable antivirus/spyware scanners when you play the game, and run a full defrag

disabling system restore and running 'ccleaner' will free up some space for you too

I never have things like my games on the same drive as windows.

My 2 main PCs have 40GB Drives as C:. This one is a Raptor, and my No2 is a Maxtor.

Both are hopefully going to go Vista and thats why I have upped them to 40GB, however, previously, I used an 80GB but only had an 8GB Partition with the rest of it being used for my ISO Images.

This PC Im on right now has the following setup :-

Raptor 36
C:(Windows )

250GB WD
D: = ( Apps )
F: = 30GB ( Scraps )

250GB WD
E: = Media

Hitachi 80GB
M: = Downloads

Hitachi 80GB
T: = ISO Images

I have my drives like this and it has been fully successful for me and I am fully able to download a couple of dozen torrents to M:, I can sent a Movie from E: to my TV, I can burn 4 DVDs at once, defrag my drives and play a game such as Quake4, Doom3 etc without any noticeable slowdown at all.

There is no way in hell that I would be able to do half that with one drive.

OK, so I reinstalled this afternoon. Put all drivers and applications on, AV, etc. Windows Updates, cleared prefetch, defragged and put MOHAA on C: (which is now 15Gb)

It runs fine, so i'm confused. However, its not that simple to test it back on D: as it would mean a re-install of the OS again.
