did a google for
Games that use 4 cores lots to choose from :-)

Doesn't GTA4 use 4 cores?

I remember when it first came out people with 2 core CPU's were having a lot more performance problems than those with 4.

from google search;

GTA 4 will use as many cores as there are available. If you have 2 cores it will use 2, 3 cores it will use 3 cores and naturally 4 cores it will use 4 cores. The i7 is a different matter it DOES NOT have 8 cores. An i7 has 4 cores like a normal quadcore processor. However i7's use a new enhanced version of hyperthreading that made it's first appearance in the P4 processors. This gives the i7 four extra "virtual" cores but they are not "proper" cores.

Now a game has to be designed to work with hyperthreading and since hyperthreading is a "niche" thing and only just starting it means support for it is thin on the ground. So if you run GTA 4 on an i7 it will use the 4 "proper" cores but it will not use the 4 "virtual" cores. it will also only register as using 50% of the i7 because it can only use the proper cores and not the virtual cores.

just because a game uses 4 cores does not mean it actually needs 4 cores.

most of these games that use four cores use 1 core maxed out and then 3 cores at maybe 10-20% load , i doubt there would be any benefit over a 2 core cpu for a lot of games.

its wierd no review sites have ever gone to the trouble of disabling cores in msconfig to see how much difference there would be on say a I7 980X going from one core and adding one more core in msconfig each time.

its almost as if they dont realise windows can fully disable cores

Even when more cores are used the game may be badly optimised for multi-cores. BFBC2, from what I've read, often uses all cores in a quad but mainly the fourth, often maxing it out.
